For the Audi 90 and Audi 80 models popular in the 100s, a “named” power unit was created, which expanded the line of Volkswagen engines EA827-2,0 (2E, AAE, ABF, ABK, ABT, ACE, ADY, AGG).
Description
In 1990, specialists from the VAG auto concern developed and put into production another internal combustion engine for the Audi 80 and 100, which received the factory code AAD. The production of the motor was carried out until 1993 inclusive.
The new engine had many positive qualities, but the use of the KE-Motronic ignition / fuel injection system with self-diagnosis and knock control did not play a plausible role. Thanks to KE-Motronic, many car enthusiasts find the AAD moody.
Changes received timing drive and CPG. Now, when the drive belt breaks, the valves meet with the piston are practically excluded.
The Audi AAD engine is a 2,0-liter in-line four-cylinder petrol engine with a capacity of 115 hp. with and a torque of 168 Nm.
Installed on the following Audi models:
- 80 B3 /8A, B3/ (1990-1991);
- 100 Avant C4 /4A_/ (1990-1993);
- 100 sedan /4A, S4/ (1990-1992);
- Cup 89 /8B/ (1990-1993).
By design, AAD has much in common with the VW 2E engine, widely known to our motorist.
There is practically no difference in the arrangement of the cylinder block, CPG and timing (with the exception of the location in the engine compartment).
The differences lie in the engine management systems. AAD uses KE-Motronic ECMS. Spark plugs Champion N7BYC.
In the timing drive, the manufacturer recommends replacing the belt after 90 thousand km, but in our operating conditions it is advisable to do this operation earlier, after about 60-70 thousand km of run.
In the vast majority of cases, the valves remain intact when the belt breaks, there is no bending. But deviations in this matter are possible.
In the lubrication system during the production years of the Audi 100, Volkswagen branded engine oil with a tolerance of 500/501 was relevant. To date, tolerances 502.00/505.00 and 504/507 apply. For all-weather conditions and year-round use, SAE 10W-40, 10W-30 or 5W-40 is recommended. System capacity 3,0 liters.

The manufacturer recommends using AI-95 gasoline. The system is sensitive to fuel quality. Many motorists replace the mechanical injector with an electronic one.

Reliability
An AAD engine is considered reliable if it is serviced well and on time. Subject to this requirement, its resource is up to 450 thousand km without major repairs.
Car owners in their reviews speak out about this unambiguously. For example, Farike from Uralsk writes: “… the engine is simple and reliable". At the same time, the not quite adequate operation of the fuel injection system is emphasized.
The margin of safety allows you to boost the internal combustion engine up to 190 liters. forces. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that such a motor will work on the strength of 40 thousand km, or even less. The most unpleasant thing is that after such a run it will not be possible to restore its performance.
The only painless option for increasing the power of the unit is chip tuning. This operation will add about 10-12 hp to the engine. s, which will be hardly noticeable against the general background. At the same time, high-quality chip tuning will reduce fuel consumption and increase the ease of engine control (more precise response to the fuel pedal, elimination of failures during acceleration, etc.).
Weak spots

Maintainability

During repairs, some motorists replace some internal combustion engine components with more progressive and cheaper ones.
