The engine builders of the VAG auto concern have developed and put into production a power unit that has a number of fundamental differences from those previously produced. The internal combustion engine entered the line of Volkswagen engines EA827-1,8 (AAM, ABS, ADZ, AGN, ARG, RP, PF).

Description

The engine was created in 1995 and was produced until 2000 inclusive. It was intended to equip the car models of the concern's own production that were in demand at that time.

The engine was produced at the VAG factories.

The Audi, Volkswagen ADR engine is a 1,8-liter four-cylinder in-line gasoline aspirated engine with a capacity of 125 hp. with and a torque of 168 Nm.

Installed on cars:

  • Audi A4 Avant /8D5, B5/ (1995-2001);
  • A6 Avant /4A, C4/ (1995-1997);
  • Cabriolet /8G7, B4/ (1997-2000);
  • Volkswagen Passat B5 /3B_/ (1996-2000).

The cylinder block is traditionally made of cast iron, with an integrated auxiliary shaft that transmits rotation to the oil pump.

The cylinder head received significant changes. It houses two camshafts (DOHC), inside there are 20 valve guides, five per cylinder. The valves are equipped with hydraulic compensators.

The timing drive has a feature - it includes a belt and a chain. The belt transmits rotation from the crankshaft to the exhaust camshaft, and from it, through the chain, the intake camshaft rotates.

The belt requires constant monitoring, since if it breaks, the valves bend. Replacement is carried out after 60 thousand kilometers.

The manufacturer has determined the resource of the remaining components and parts of the timing drive to be 200 thousand km, but in practice, with proper operation, they nurse much longer.

The lubrication system uses oil with a tolerance of 500/501 (until 1999) or 502.00/505.00 (since 2000) viscosity (SAE) 0W30, 5W30 and 5W40. The capacity of the system is 3,5 liters.

Fuel supply system injector. It allows the use of AI-92 gasoline, but on it the unit does not show its capabilities to the full extent.

ECM Motronic 7.5 ME from Bosch. The ECU is equipped with a self-diagnosis function. Ignition coils can be in different designs - individual for each cylinder or common, with 4 leads.

On the issue of internal combustion engine reliability, the opinions of car owners were significantly divided. In essence, 20-valve engines are highly reliable and durable. Car service workers note the long service life of some engines and say that ADR is able to move more than 500 thousand km without major repairs.

The only thing that needs to be done to ensure that the motor is always in this condition is to service it in a timely and quality manner. Savings here, especially on oil, will inevitably lead to malfunctions.

Motorist Vasily744 (Tver) elaborates on this situation: “… yes normal motor adr. I will say this: if you do not follow, then any engine will be bent, and my father has been driving the V5 Passat for 15 years. I bought a Passat with this engine too. Well, for those whose engine is constantly breaking down, the only recommendation is to look under the hood more often, detect and fix the problem in a timely manner, and the engine will always be in working order.

Some motorists are not satisfied with the power of the unit. The margin of safety of ADR allows it to be forced more than twice. The nodes and assemblies will withstand such a load, but the resource will sharply begin to approach the minimum. At the same time, the value of some technical characteristics will decrease.

Experts do not advise to get involved in tuning. The motor is already old and any intervention will cause another breakdown.

Weak spots

There are weak points in the engine. But they require careful analysis. Car owners note the capriciousness of the chain tensioner, which simultaneously acts as a valve timing regulator.

This unit, subject to all the recommendations of the manufacturer, easily nurses 200 thousand km. Further problems may arise (rustling or beating of the chain, the appearance of various knocks, etc.). But they appear solely due to the natural wear of the assembly parts. Timely replacement of worn parts eliminates the problem.

The next "weak point" is the tendency to contamination of the crankcase ventilation unit (VKG). It suffices here to answer two questions. First - on which motors does the VKG not clog? Second - when was the last time this node was washed? When using high-quality fuels and lubricants, especially oil, observing the terms of its replacement, as well as periodic maintenance, the VKG system is able to work for a long time.

Unit traction failures are associated with the formation of oil and soot deposits on the throttle valve (DZ). Here, poor fuel quality comes to the fore. Not the last role in this is played by the malfunction of the VKG valve. Timely cleaning of the DZ and valve eliminates the problem.

Cause complaints about the low service life of the pump of the cooling system. This is typical for water pumps with plastic impeller, mostly Chinese. There is only one way out - either find the original pump, or put up with its frequent replacement.

Thus, the listed deviations are not weak points of the engine, but rather its features that require careful monitoring and maintenance.

Engineering shortcomings in the development of internal combustion engines include the phenomenon of valve bending when the timing belt breaks and the low service life of the viscous fan coupling. It is these two parameters that can be called the weak points of the engine.

Maintainability

The Audi VW ADR engine has certain design difficulties. But this does not prevent it from being repaired in garage conditions, which is what many car owners do.
