A series of BMW M43 gasoline engines from 1.6 to 1.9 liters was produced from 1993 to 2002 and was installed on such popular models as the 5-Series in the E34 body and the 3-Series in the E36 and E46 bodies. There was a 16-valve version of the 1.9-liter engine under its own index M44B19.
The R4 line includes: M10, M40, N42, N43, N45, N46, N13, N20 and B48.
