Hyundai Corporation over time increased the G4KD engine by installing a crankshaft with a piston stroke of 97 mm. The result was a new 2,4-liter G4KE engine with the same system for changing the phases of the hydraulic distribution system on the shafts, without hydraulic lifters, with the same malfunctions. Knocks, noises and extraneous sounds have not disappeared anywhere, but the new unit - a copy of the Japanese 4B12 - was developed jointly with Mitsubishi under the World Engine program, which automatically increased its reputation in the eyes of users.

G4KE was gradually transferred to Europe, began to be produced in Slovakia, at its own facilities. Initially, the motor was with one phase regulator and a conventional sump. Then two phase regulators appeared, an improved sump and the volume of oil in the system increased. The applicability of this power unit is quite wide - many cars received it in addition to Hyundai, because models of the famous Mitsubishi are also included here. The engine belongs to the Theta 2 family, which replaced the outdated Beta series. The designers managed to introduce the latest improvements. The series was also called the Chrysler Ward.

The difference between the G4KE and its predecessor G4KD in the increased piston group was not in vain. This made it possible to increase the power of the internal combustion engine, to somewhat stabilize the speed. Otherwise, there are no structural differences from the younger brother. The BC and cylinder head of the engine are lightweight - they are made of 80% aluminum. The timing drive is a reliable metal chain that will run for a very long time if you monitor the part in a timely manner, fill the engine with high-quality oil and fuel. It is also important to correctly set the tightening torque.

  2. Dismantle the cylinder head cover together with the gasket, having previously disconnected the attachments.
  3. Raise the piston of the 1st cylinder to TDC by turning the crankshaft and aligning the risk with the corresponding mark on the engine housing. At the same time, check that the mark on the camshaft sprocket is facing the cylinder head. Otherwise, you need to rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees.
  4. Measure valve clearances using a feeler gauge set. On the intake valves, the maximum permissible value is 0,10-0,30 mm, on the exhaust valves - 0,20-0,40 mm.
  5. The gaps must also be measured by turning the crankshaft 360 degrees and aligning the risk with the mark on the timing chain guard.

To adjust the gaps, the piston of the 1st cylinder must be set to TDC, look at the crankshaft risk on the timing chain and camshaft sprocket. Only then can the bolt of the timing chain protection manual hole be pulled out, releasing the ratchet. Next, you need to remove the front protection of the camshaft bearings and measure the removed cam using the device. The size of the new cam must be selected strictly according to the standard values: -0,20 mm at the inlet and -0,30 mm at the outlet. As for the size of the gasket, it should be 3 mm.

  1. After installing a new cam on the cylinder head, the intake camshaft is installed.
  2. Timing chain marks and camshaft sprocket are aligned.
  3. Installed exhaust camshaft.
  4. The bearing protection and the service bolt are put in place - it is necessary to tighten with a torque of 11,8 Nm.
  5. The crankshaft rotates two revolutions clockwise, the valve clearance is rechecked. At the inlet it should be 0,17-0,23 mm, and at the outlet - 0,27-0,33 mm.

G4KE Engine Malfunctions

Here are the most common problems that occur on this motor.

  1. Noisy work that worries owners after 50 thousand kilometers. This can be the chirping of injectors - easily eliminated by adjusting the injector, or increased vibrations associated with worn spark plugs.
  2. Swimming revolutions due to clogging of the throttle assembly.
