Mercedes-Benz M112 engine

The M112 power unit is another 6-cylinder version from the German company, with different displacements (2.5 l; 2.8 l; 3.2 l, etc.). It replaced the structurally obsolete in-line M104 and was installed on the entire Mercedes-Benz line with rear-wheel drive, ranging from class C- to S-.

Description M112

Mercedes-Benz M112 engine
M112 engine

This six was very popular in the 2000s. Released in 1997-1998, the M112 power plant was the first of a series of V-shaped six-cylinder units. It was on the basis of 112 that the next engine of the series, the M113, was designed - a unified analogue of this installation with eight cylinders.

The new 112 series was formed from a number of different engines. However, unlike its predecessors, in the new M112 it was decided to build the most convenient layout, taking up less space under the hood. The 90-degree V-shaped version is exactly what was needed. Thus, it was decided to increase the compactness of the motor, and in order to stabilize against direct and lateral vibrations, add a balance shaft between the rows of cylinders.

Other features.

  1. Aluminum cylinder block - the Germans decided to completely abandon heavy cast iron. Of course, this had a positive effect on the total mass of the unit. The BC is also equipped with durable sleeves. The flint in the composition of the alloy improves the durability of the elements.

  2. The cylinder head is also aluminum, assembled according to the SOHC scheme - one hollow camshaft.
  3. There are 3 valves and 2 spark plugs per cylinder (for better combustion of fuel assemblies). Thus, this engine is 18-valve. Thermal valve clearances do not need to be adjusted, since there are hydraulic compensators (special hydraulic type pushers).
  4. There is an adjustable timing system.
  5. The intake manifold is plastic, with variable geometry. Graduation - from an alloy of magnesium and aluminum.
  6. Timing chain drive, service life up to 200 thousand km. The chain is double, reliable, rotates on gears protected by rubber.
  7. The injection is carried out under the control of the Bosch Motronic system.
  8. Almost all engines in the series, including the M112, were assembled in Bad Cannstatt.

The 112 series was replaced by another six, introduced in 2004, called the M272.

M112 modifications

This motor was equipped with both manual and automatic transmission. The engineers did a good job, they managed to come up with a universal layout. So, if the hood of the car is low, then the air filter is placed on the right wing, and its connection with the throttle is carried out through the pipe with the DRV. But on a car, where the engine compartment is large, the filter is installed directly on the motor, and the flow meter is mounted directly on the throttle. Engine malfunctions

The design of this internal combustion engine with a 3-valve system only seems simple. In fact, all experts are aware of the characteristic problems of this motor.

  1. Oil leaks that occur due to a weak seal in the oil heat exchanger. The only thing that helps is replacing the gasket.
  2. Increased oil consumption, due to wear of the valve stem seals or clogged crankcase ventilation. Cleaning helps.
  3. Loss of power after a 70-mile run, due to wear on the injectors, sensor, or crankshaft pulley.
  4. Strong vibrations that are inevitable when the balance shaft is worn.

The destruction of the crankshaft damper is also considered as one of the weak links of this motor. This pulley has a rubber layer (damper), which begins to crawl out and exfoliate over time. Gradually, the pulley no longer works normally, it touches nearby nodes and mechanisms.

Another known issue is related to crankcase ventilation. The result of this problem is immediately visible: either the seam of the valve covers is oiled, or the fuel consumption increases.

And the third thing that often worries the owners of the M112 engine is oil consumption. However, if the consumption is not more than one liter per thousand kilometers, then there is no need to worry. This is allowed by the manufacturer himself, explaining this by the obsolescence of important internal combustion engine mechanisms. Remember that the cost of solving such a problem exceeds the price of the oil bought as a top-up. To understand the causes of oil burning, one of these malfunctions should be kept in mind:

  • damage to the oil filter housing, valve cover or oil filler neck - these problems require urgent attention;
  • damage to oil seals or engine pan - also from a number of mandatory replacement procedures;
  • wear of ShPG, together with valve stem seals, cylinders and pistons;
  • damage to the crankcase ventilation system, which is caused by the use of low-grade oil - the problem is solved by cleaning the ventilation.

Cleaning the ventilation ducts is easy. This can be done at home. You will need to remove both covers of the ventilation chambers, then use a 1,5 mm drill to clean the calibrated holes. The main thing is not to open the holes to a larger diameter, which will lead to even more oil consumption. In addition, we must not forget to replace all ventilation hoses after 30 thousand kilometers.

In general, this is a completely reliable motor that will last without any problems if you fill in high-quality consumable fluids. It is able to serve 300 thousand km or more.

Modernization

The M112 engine has good development potential. You can easily increase the power of the unit, because the market provides a lot of tuning kits for this motor. The easiest upgrade option is atmospheric. For this you will need the following:

  • sports camshafts, preferably Schrick;
  • exhaust without catalyst (sports);
  • cold air intake;
  • tuning firmware.

At the exit, you can safely get up to 250 horses.

Turbo installation

Another option is to install mechanical boost. However, this method will require a more professional approach, since a standard internal combustion engine can withstand pressures up to 0,5 bar. It is advisable to use ready-made compressor kits, such as Kleemann, which do not require additional work to replace the piston. Thus, this will make it possible to obtain 340 hp. With. and more. To further increase power, it is recommended to change the piston, reduce compression and upgrade the cylinder head. Naturally, in this case it is possible to blow far beyond 0,5 bar.

FaridHello, friends!! There are two options for buying the 210th, one is the E-200 2.0l compr. 2001, restyled mileage 180t.km, price 500. Second E-240 2.4l 2000 restyled, mileage 165t.km, price 500. Both are “AVANGARD”. Advise on which one to stop. Before that, I rode “tractors”, I don’t know much about gasoline engines, so I ask for advice, which one is more reliable?
Entourage112 naturally. how can such a question arise?
thought outA 2 liter compressor will be much more interesting than the smallest 112th engine. A friend had one, he drove very cheerfully, and with a quiet ride he spent less than 10 in the city.
Kolya SaratovFirst you need to decide on the purpose. If you drive, then 112. If it is comfortable to move from one point to another, while saving gasoline (taxes), then 111. I myself move to 111 manual transmissions, enough for overtaking and for speed.
FaridAppointment? I need a car for myself. I plan to drive a lot, because the vacation is short. I don’t drive calmly. I’m interested in reliability, what are the difficulties in repairing, spare parts at a price? I live in Norilsk, everything will have to be ordered through i-no. (spare parts)
SyndicateTake what you like, both are fine.
Tonictake ONLY 112!!! Well, count yourself 2 liters, 4 cylinders for Eshka, this is a real dohlyak! It’s another matter for Seshka! with 112 you can masturbate, you can fry, and with 111 current masturbate))) Yes, in your area 112 will cool down longer and freeze less!)
ConstanceExcuse me, but where is it much more interesting?
SlavazabratThe choice is yours? Compressor 2,0 is 2,5 But it is noisy! A 112 motor clear frisky without noisy. Advantage can be found in any motor! Merc is Merc!
MaxFor the city, the 111th is enough. On the highway, you will be horrified by its slowness.
Konstantin KurbatovWhy is everyone scolding small engines! I was driving my car at 210 km/h, then I became afraid, first for my life, then for my license. where to drive now with amendments to the traffic police?..and overtaking five trucks in a few seconds is not a question!..the 2.0 engine doesn’t work—go for a service! and cities, they are different: in mine there are 40 people, there is no village ring. there is nowhere to put the power. and I think I’m not the only one like that Py.Sy..I have two cars, I have something to compare with. It’s not so bad with the 000!
SlyIf you take 112, then 3.2 To each his own. Take v6, from which the Lancers with tricks leave. But you will pour buckets of oil.
VadimirI have 111 2.3. he does not go on the track in comparison with 112. try to bypass the truck by 90 and you will understand the difference.
Aboriginalin your place, I would take only 4matic and 112th any with the lowest possible mileage + nominally webasta + 4-zone climate and max 16″ wheels - completely on a rag!
FaridI looked at 4matics, they sell very few of them .. 2.8 and 3.2 4matics would take in excellent condition. You can do it without a Webasto, gasoline engines heat up well, but I don’t leave my car on the street. Thanks for the advice.
MaxssSomehow the winter before last, when I had a C320 with a chic 112 engine, when visiting various services I saw a lot of unfortunate owners of a C200 with a compressor, whose cars do not start / eat 18l / do not go in the cold. By the way, there are also problems with the service - not everyone can fix it. My s-shka ate 10-13 liters, rode smartly and always started. So no compressors and 4-cylinder engines!! - this is a commercial move for Mercedes and a mistake for the owner, you should be ashamed of it. A 2 liter compressor will be much more interesting than the smallest 112th engine. A friend had one, he drove very cheerfully, and with a quiet ride he spent less than 10 in the city. yes of course))) they are ALL ushatannye!!! the living are not. He starts to drive only at 4-5000 rpm, and given that all 10 years they drove it like that - like a non-resident - at the same time he eats like from a pistol, and, besides, 180 or lope there forces - for the e-class - this is nothing at all . Only V6 - it has more torque and pulls better from the bottom, respectively, eats less and breaks less. and do not confuse a person., dear sellers of equipment with an 1800 engine with a compressor)) although there is like a 210 with a 2.0 liter engine without a compressor 136 hp, the same hat)))
