At the beginning of 2011, Mercedes officially published the first photos of the new 1.6-liter internal combustion engine. This was done at the Shanghai Auto Show with the sole purpose of testing the attitude of potential customers towards the new W176 car. The debut of the M270, as the main working option instead of the M266, took place on the W246. The engine was equipped with a turbocharger and direct injection Blue Direct.

Mercedes-Benz M270 engineThe transversely mounted M270 engine is equipped with direct injection and a turbocharger. The motor is connected to a mechanical box with two clutches.

Structurally, the engine differs from analogues in a lightweight design - a compact BC is cast from aluminum under pressure. The cylinder head and crankshaft are also made using winged metal. The latter rotates either with the help of four counterweights or a balancer. Available in 1.6 liter or 2 liter versions. Both versions received compact, fast-acting camshaft adjusters.

ICE direct injection provides higher compression compared to conventional injection. Accordingly, the efficiency also increases. The pressure is provided by a pump that is capable of delivering 200 bar. This is a single-plunger mechanism with an integrated flow sensor. Fuel is supplied through high-pressure lines to nozzles that carry out direct injection into the chamber. Piezo effect injector, equipped with atomizers with a large number of holes.

BU engine of a new type. The circuit is entirely connected with the control of the KM value, it is integrated with the gearbox and other important components of the car. Efficiency is increased due to the lightness of the engine compared to four-cylinder units of this class and low friction losses.

Modifications

M270 is divided into the following variants:

  • 6 l DE16 AL red, 102-122 hp With.;
  • 6 l DE16 AL, 156 hp. With.;
  • 2 l DE20 AL, 156-218 hp With.

All power plants are four-cylinder, equipped with balancers, an oil pump and a pump. The motors use the latest Camtronic system with 2-level variable timing and Blue Direct system. A useful innovation was the use of multi-spark ignition.
