The diesel four OM604 is the junior analogue of the series. Recall that in the same family there are five OM605 and six OM606. The engine came out in 1993 and was installed on the W202.

The cylinder block is cast iron, the heads are 24-valve, the injection pump is of a mechanical type. Such a motor is called a vortex chamber, since during the working stroke the air swirls strongly when passing through the preliminary chamber. This is where fuel injection takes place. Thus, the combustion of diesel fuel is carried out in a special type of chamber located in the cylinder head. The remaining gases rush into the cylinder, acting on the piston. These are the main indicators of the operation of this power unit.

Camshaft OM604 double, overhead DOHC type. This scheme replaced the old one with a SOHC type camshaft. Fuel injection is direct.

OM604 was produced in two working volumes:

  • 1997 cm3 - this motor was produced in the period 1996-1998;
  • 2155 cm3 - produced in the period 1993-1998.

Both versions were equipped with an injection system from Lucas - extremely unreliable and problematic. First of all, the seals of these mechanisms fail, which become brittle and leak over time. As for electric pumps from Bosch, they were installed on the latest versions of OM604 engines. Among the features of these motors I would like to highlight:

  • noisy operation, which is explained by the simultaneous combustion of the entire portion of the fuel;
  • lower consumption of diesel fuel, but also low power compared to gasoline counterparts.

We also note that the OM604 was the last junior pre-chamber engine in the history of Mercedes-Benz.

  3. The complexity of the repair. The injection system is extremely difficult to restore.
