In 1958, on the basis of a 1.9-liter M121 gasoline engine, a diesel engine of the same volume was created, which received the OM621 index and compares favorably with the OHV predecessor with an overhead camshaft index of 636. In 1961, its working volume was increased to 2.0 liters. In 1968, as a result of the modernization of such an engine, the OM615 of interest to us appeared. Its design differed only in small things: it is a similar prechamber diesel engine, with a 4-cylinder in-line cast-iron block, an 8-valve cast-iron cylinder head without hydraulic lifters and a two-row timing chain that rotates a single camshaft and in-line injection pump Bosch M.

In addition to the 2.0-liter modification, there is also a 2.2-liter version with a large piston stroke. Also, on the basis of this engine, a 2.4-liter OM616 diesel unit was subsequently created.

This is a very reliable diesel engine and its most famous problem is leaks on the crankshaft rear oil seal, which is made in the form of a packing here. But don't ignore them.
The Bosch M type injection pump has an individual lubrication system that needs to be serviced, there are also ruptures at the rack drive membrane and failure of the booster pump.
Despite the massive appearance, the chain does not last so long compared to the motor resource. Approximately once every 200 - 250 thousand km, it changes along with its calmers and stars.
The manufacturer declared the resource of the OM 615 engine at 240 km, but it serves up to 000 km.
