Mercedes M272 engine
Content
The Mercedes-Benz M272 engine is a V6 introduced in 2004 and used throughout the 00s. There are several aspects that distinguish it from its predecessors. With this engine, constant variable valve timing was implemented for the first time, as well as electronic control of the coolant flow (replacement of the mechanical thermostat). Like the M112 engine, it also uses a balance shaft mounted between the cylinder banks in the cylinder block to eliminate vibrations.
Specifications M272
The M272 engine has the following characteristics:
- manufacturer - Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt Plant;
- years of release - 2004-2013;
- cylinder block material - aluminum;

Problems and Weaknesses
- Oil leaks. Check the plastic cylinder head plugs - they may need to be replaced. This is the cause of most leaks that occur.
- Intake manifold valves defective. The engine runs unstable when faced with this problem. In this case, a complete replacement of the intake manifold is required. This problem occurs on engines prior to 2007 and is one of the most time consuming to troubleshoot.
- Unfortunately, most Mercedes-Benz E-Class models with the M272 engine produced between 2004-2008 have problems with the balance shafts. This is by far one of the most common faults. When the balance shaft gears begin to fail, you'll likely hear a squealing sound - always a clear sign of engine trouble. The specific culprit for this problem is usually a prematurely worn sprocket.
Tuning
The simplest way to slightly increase power is associated with chip tuning. It consists in the removal of catalysts and the installation of a filter with reduced resistance, as well as in sports firmware. An additional advantage that the owner of the car receives in this case is from 15 to 20 horsepower. Installing sports camshafts gives another 20 to 25 horsepower. With further tuning, the car becomes inconvenient for moving in urban areas.
