Mercedes M274 engine
Content
The Mercedes-Benz М274 engine was first put into production in 2012. Built on the basis of the M270, however, the designers modified the model taking into account the past shortcomings and requirements of the time. The M274 is the same four-cylinder in-line direct injection engine, only it is installed longitudinally. Other differences from the predecessor model are as follows:
- A durable chain is installed on the timing drive, designed for 100 thousand km of run.
- The modified timing system allows the engine to operate correctly over a wide rpm range.
- An updated fuel system that provides better atomization and, as a result, better fuel combustion.
So, as a result of these design changes, the Mercedes-Benz М274 engine appeared, the most modern modifications of which can develop a power of 211 horsepower. For correct operation, it is recommended to use AI-95 or AI-98 gasoline.
Modifications М274
In total, two modifications of the Mercedes-Benz М274 engine were developed, the main difference between which is the engine size and, accordingly, the potential power and efficiency.
DE16 AL - version with a volume of 1,6 liters and a maximum power of 156 horsepower.
DE20 AL - a variant with an increased engine displacement up to 2,0 liters and a maximum power of 211 hp.

Problems M274
A problem typical for most models of Mercedes-Benz engines - rapid contamination of units - did not pass by the M274 either. All working components require regular cleaning, the absence of which quickly leads to overheating of the engine and the subsequent occurrence of other malfunctions.
The alternator belt is also subject to rapid wear. You can determine the need for replacement by the characteristic whistle. The turbine must also be replaced after 100-150 thousand kilometers.
After a run of 100 thousand km, there is a high probability of wear of the phase shifter. As a consequence, crackling and noise occur during cold start-up.
Among other things, this model is extremely demanding on the quality of the oil - only high-quality oils should be used in maintenance, and replaced as often as possible.
Also at the end of this article, you will find a video on solving the problem with the camshaft in this engine.
Mercedes-Benz М274 engine tuning
This model offers many tuning possibilities. The most radical way to increase power is to replace the turbine with a variant from the M271 EVO. This, coupled with the appropriate program, will allow the engine to reach 210 horsepower. Softer options - install downpipe and reflash the engine to fit your needs.

Is the oil connector problem also found in W213E class 250?I heard that the cause is transmitted from the camshaft and in the worst case, the ECU will also die, but it's better to check the connectors around the engine regularly!
I bought a W213 250 wagon for some reason this time, but I'm already worried before delivery. I've heard a lot of cases where C-class has oil around the connector, but I didn't think it was happening in E-class.After all, the M274 engine is the same engine for the C class and the E class, so it will happen!Every time I drive, I make it a must-have item for inspection and if symptoms appear, I will immediately dock!
