Engine Mitsubishi 4d56

The Mitsubishi 4d56 power unit is a four-cylinder in-line diesel engine, which was designed for cars of the same brand in the 90s.

He formed an opinion about himself as a very reliable engine, which not only does not have any diseases or design flaws, but is both economical and easy to maintain at the same time.

Engine history

The engine division of the Japanese automaker Mitsubishi has been developing the 4d56 engine for ten years. As a result, a sufficiently powerful power unit was produced, which is able to simultaneously quickly accelerate such a difficult car as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and overcome impassability.

Mitsubishi 4d56 (pictured in the cut) debuted back in 1986 on the first generation Pajero. It is the successor of the 2,4-liter 4D55 engine.Engine Mitsubishi 4d56 The short block of this motor is made of cast iron alloy, which includes an in-line arrangement of four cylinders. The cylinder diameter has been slightly increased compared to its predecessor 4D55 and is 91,1 mm. The block is equipped with a forged crankshaft with two balancing shafts and an increased piston stroke. The length of the connecting rods and the compression height of the pistons have also been increased and amount to 158 and 48,7 mm, respectively. As a result of all the changes, the manufacturer managed to achieve an increased engine displacement - 2,5 liters.

On top of the block is a cylinder head (CCB), which is made of aluminum alloy and includes swirl combustion chambers. The gas distribution mechanism of the engine (timing) is equipped with one camshaft, that is, two valves per cylinder (one intake and one exhaust). As expected, the diameter of the intake valves is slightly larger than the exhaust valves (40 and 34 mm, respectively), and the valve stem is 8 mm thick.

Important! Since the 4D56 engine has been produced for quite some time, the gas distribution system does not differ in any innovative solutions. Therefore, it is recommended to adjust the valves (rockers) for this motor every 15 thousand kilometers (the clearances of the intake and exhaust valves are 0,15 mm on a cold engine). In addition, the timing drive does not include a chain, but a belt, which indicates its replacement every 90 thousand kilometers. If this is neglected, then the risk of belt breakage increases, which will lead to deformation of the rockers!

The Mitsubishi 4d56 engine has analogues in the engine model line from the Korean automaker Hyundai. The very first variations of this engine were atmospheric and did not differ in any outstanding dynamic or traction performance: the power was 74 hp, and the torque was 142 N * m. The Korean company equipped them with their D4BA and D4BX cars.

After that, the production of a turbocharged modification of the 4d56 diesel engine started, where the MHI TD04-09B was used as a turbocharger. This unit gave the power plant a new life, which was expressed in an increase in power and torque (90 hp and 197 N * m, respectively). The Korean analogue of this motor was called D4BF and was installed on Hyundai Galloper and Grace.

The 4d56 engines that powered the second generation Mitsubishi Pajero were equipped with a more efficient TD04-11G turbine. The next improvement was the addition of an intercooler, as well as an increase in the main technical indicators of the engine: power up to - 104 hp, and torque - up to 240 N * m. This time the power plant had the Hyundai D4BH index.

The release of the 4d56 engine version with the Common Rail fuel system took place in 2001. The motor was equipped with a brand new MHI TF035HL turbocharger paired with an intercooler. In addition, new pistons were used, resulting in a reduction in the compression ratio to 17. All this led to an increase in power by 10 hp and torque by 7 Nm, compared to the previous engine model. The engines of this generation were designated di-d (pictured) and met the EURO-3 environmental standard.Engine Mitsubishi 4d56

An improved DOHC cylinder head system, that is, a two-camshaft system that includes four valves per cylinder (two intake and two exhaust), as well as a Common Rail fuel injection system of the second modification, began to be used on 4d56 CRDi power units since 2005. The diameters of the valves have also changed, they have become smaller: inlet - 31,5 mm, and exhaust - 27,6 mm, the valve stem has decreased to 6 mm. The first variation of the engine had an IHI RHF4 turbocharger, which made it possible to develop power up to 136 hp, and the torque increased to 324 N * m. There was also a second generation of this motor, which is characterized by the same turbine, but with variable geometry. In addition, completely different pistons were used, designed for a compression ratio of 16,5. Both power units met the environmental standards EURO-4 and EURO-5, in accordance with the year of manufacture.

Important! This motor is also characterized by periodic valve adjustment, it is recommended to carry it out every 90 thousand kilometers. Their value for a cold engine is as follows: intake - 0,09 mm, exhaust - 0,14 mm.

Starting in 1996, the 4D56 engine began to be removed from some car models, and the 4M40 EFI power unit was installed instead. The final completion of production has not yet come, they are equipped with cars in individual countries. The successor to the 4D56 was the 4N15 engine, which debuted in 2015.

Technical specifications

The working volume of the 4d56 engine on all its versions was 2,5 liters, which made it possible to remove 95 hp without a turbocharger on later models. The engine does not differ in any new design solutions and is made in a standard form: an in-line layout of four cylinders, with an aluminum cylinder head, and a cast iron block. The use of just such metal alloys provides the required temperature stability of the motor and, moreover, significantly reduces its mass.

Another feature for this engine is the crankshaft, which is made of steel and has five support points in the form of bearings at once. The sleeves are dry and pressed into the block, which does not allow the production of a sleeve during capitalization. Although the 4d56 pistons are made of lightweight aluminum alloy, they are still characterized by excellent durability and reliability.

Swirl combustion chambers were installed in order to increase power characteristics, as well as improve environmental parameters. In addition, with their help, the designers achieved complete combustion of fuel, which increased the efficiency of the entire engine, while at the same time reducing the level of emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.

Since 1991, the Mitsubishi 4d56 power unit has undergone some changes. It was equipped with a special system for increased engine heating before starting. This made it possible to solve the age-old problem with the operation of a diesel car in the winter, because from that moment on, the owners of 4d56 engines forgot about the problem associated with freezing diesel fuel at low temperatures.

The same version of the Mitsubishi 4d56 engine was equipped with a turbocharger, which had air and water cooling. Its presence allowed not only to increase the power characteristics, but also to give more confident traction, starting from low speeds. Although this was a new development, the turbine, judging by the feedback from the owners, had an excellent level of reliability and was generally extremely successful. Its breakdown was almost always associated with improper operation and poor-quality maintenance work.

It should also be emphasized that the Mitsubishi 4d56 is unpretentious in operation and maintenance. After all, even an oil change can be done every 15 thousand kilometers. The high-pressure fuel pump (pictured) was also characterized by a long service life - it is replaced no earlier than at a mileage of 300 thousand km, when the plungers wear out.Engine Mitsubishi 4d56

Typical faults

This engine has a good degree of reliability, but like any other engine, it has a number of its “diseases”, which, at least sometimes, occur:

  • Increased vibration level, as well as fuel detonation. Most likely, this malfunction was formed due to the balancer belt, which could stretch or even break. Its replacement will solve the problem and it is done without removing the engine;
  • Increased fuel consumption. In this situation, there may be more than one reason. The most common is a malfunction of the injection pump. In most cases, by 200-300 thousand kilometers, it wears out to a large extent, as a result of which it does not create the necessary pressure level, the engine does not pull, and fuel consumption increases;
  • Engine oil leak from under the valve cover. Repair comes down to the fact that the valve cover gasket should be replaced. The 4d56 power unit is characterized by a high degree of resistance to overheating, due to which even high temperatures rarely lead to cylinder head deformation;
  • Increase in vibration level depending on the rpm. Since this motor has a considerable weight, the first thing to pay attention to is the engine mounts, which must be changed every 300 thousand kilometers;
  • Extraneous noise (knocking). The first step is to pay attention to the crankshaft pulley;
  • Oil leakage from under the seals of the balancing shafts, crankshaft, camshaft, sump gasket, as well as the oil pressure sensor;
  • The motor smokes. Most likely, the fault is the incorrect operation of the atomizers, which leads to incomplete combustion of the fuel;
  • Engine troit. Very often, this indicates that the piston group has increased wear, in particular rings and liners. Also, a broken fuel injection angle may be to blame;
  • The seething of antifreeze in the expansion tank shows that, with a greater degree of probability, a crack has formed in the GCB and liquid is breathed out of it;
  • Very fragile fuel return pipes. Over-tightening them can lead to their rapid damage;
  • On Mitsubishi 4d56 engines, working in conjunction with automatic transmission, insufficient traction is observed. Many owners have found a way out in tightening the kickdown cable;
  • In case of insufficiently good heating of the fuel and the engine as a whole, it is necessary to adjust the automatic warm-up.

It is very important to monitor the condition of the balancing shaft belt (every 50 thousand kilometers) and, if necessary, replace it in time. Its breakage can interfere with the operation of the timing belt, which can lead to its breakage. Some owners get rid of balance shafts, but in this case, the load on the crankshaft increases, which can lead to its hollow at high speeds. The turbocharger in this engine has a good resource, which is more than 300 thousand km. It is worth noting that the EGR valve (EGR) is quite often clogged, so every 30 thousand kilometers it is necessary to clean it. Service diagnostics of the engine should also be performed for errors, as this allows you to track changes in engine characteristics.

Important! The Mitsubishi 4d56 engine, especially the 178 hp version, really dislikes low-quality fuel, which significantly reduces the overall life of the power unit. It is recommended to replace the fuel filter every 15 - 30 thousand kilometers!

4D56 engine tuning

It is worth noting that such a middle-aged engine as the Mitsubishi 4d56 should not be forced. However, some owners send this motor to a tuning service, where they perform chip tuning and change the engine firmware. So, a 116 hp model can be accelerated to 145 hp and put on about 80 N * m of torque. The 4D56 motor model for 136 hp is tuned up to 180 hp, and the torque indicators exceed 350 N * m. The most productive version of the 4D56 with 178 hp is chipped up to 210 hp, and the torque goes beyond 450 N * m.

Alteration of the Mitsubishi 4d56 engine in 2,7 l

Another interesting feature is that the 4d56 engine (usually a contract engine) is installed on a UAZ car and this spawn is carried out without any problems. The manual transmission (manual transmission) and razdatka of the Ulyanovsk car fully cope with the power of this power unit.

The difference between the D4BH engine and the D4BF

In fact, D4BH (4D56 TCI) is an analogue of D4BF, however, they have design differences in the intercooler, which cools the crankcase gases. In addition, the hole for draining oil from the turbine for one engine is located in the cylinder block housing, to which special pipes are connected, and for the other everything is located in the crankcase. The cylinder blocks of these engines have different pistons.

Repair of Mitsubishi 4d56 engine

The Mitsubishi 4d56 engine has excellent maintainability. All elements of the piston group (piston, connecting rods, rings, liners, and so on), as well as the gas distribution mechanism (prechamber, valve, rocker arm, and so on) are replaced individually. The only exception is the liners of the cylinder block, which must be changed along with the block. Attachments such as a pump, thermostat, as well as elements of the ignition system should be changed after a certain mileage, declared by the manufacturer of the part.
