Diesel units have always tempted with low fuel consumption, great maneuverability and the ability to drive hundreds of thousands of kilometers without major repairs. Unfortunately, this is not always the case with the N47 engine. The problem is related to the cumbersome timing drive solution. N47 engine - what is worth knowing about it?

BMW N47 2.0d engine - technical data

The engine with the designation N47 is a 4-cylinder 1-liter diesel engine. This unit has found its place in small cars of the 1st series, as well as SUVs, such as X3 and X143. Engine emergency power options are 163, 177, 204 hp and XNUMX hp. The 177-strong option seems to be the most problematic. However, there is no rule in this regard. The described BMW engine is characterized by low fuel consumption (especially in small vehicles) and very good torque availability. That's why it's still very popular for 2007-2011 BMW vehicles.

How did you solve the timing in the BMW N47 engine?

Why do many mechanics speak negatively about the design of the 2-litre BMW engine? The problem is not the dual mass flywheel, turbocharger or injectors. The main culprit is the timing chain and how the sprocket is arranged on the crankshaft. The drive consists of 3 chains, 4 sliders and 2 tensioners. At the predecessor (M47), the timing drive changed after 350-400 thousand kilometers, which meant peace of mind with timing service for many drivers. Of course, such an organoleptic method is not fully effective, but otherwise it is difficult to conduct such a study without disassembly. The tensioned chain makes a characteristic creaking sound.

How much does it cost to replace a timing belt on a 2.0d N47?

If it were not for the disassembly of the assembly and the possible replacement of the crankshaft, a complete timing would not be so burdensome. However, one can only dream of this. The described N47 engine from BMW costs almost 400 euros for a basic replacement of the timing drive. If the use of original parts is added, at least €100 must be added. Another €150 is the cost of replacing the belt and oil pump, which are located in front. Of course, it's undeniable that older cars will, by definition, cause problems. However, you must be aware of the considerable costs that will await you when the deadlines start to make noise.
