The history of the GA series engine began in 1989, which replaced the E series engines, and are still in production. Such engines are installed on cars of the Nissan SUNNY brand of small and medium class.
The first modification of this 14DS series (4-cylinder, in-line, carburetor) was intended for the European consumer. And in cars operated in Japan, the installation of such engines is not practiced.
In 1993, the carbureted GA14DS engine was replaced by an engine with electronic multipoint fuel injection and increased power, labeled GA14DE. Initially, this engine was equipped with SUNNY cars, and from 1993 to 2000 - at NISSAN Corporation's ALMERA. Since 2000, the NISSAN ALMERA car has not been produced.

The engine number is located on the left side of the cylinder block (view in the direction of travel), on a special platform. The numbered plate is subject to severe corrosion during long-term operation. To prevent corrosion coating - it is better to open with any heat-resistant colorless varnish.
The manufacturer guarantees intercapital repairs of units after a run of 400 km. At the same time, a prerequisite is the use of high-quality fuels and lubricants, timely (every 000 km of run) adjustment of the thermal clearances of the valves. During the operation of the GA series engine, they have proven themselves in a positive aspect:
- not whimsical to the quality of fuels and lubricants;
- installed 2 timing chains, favorably affects its operation, does not “put forward” strict requirements for the quality factor of the oil. A long chain wraps around the double relay sprocket and crankshaft gear. The second, short one, drives 2 camshafts from a double, intermediate sprocket. The valves are driven through poppet pushers without hydraulic compensators. Because of this, it is recommended that every 50000 km of run, the thermal clearances of the valves be adjusted by a set of shims;
- reliable under extreme operating conditions.
- Maintainability
Motors of the GA14 series are very simple both in design and in manufacture: the cylinder block is made of cast iron, the block head is made of aluminum.
Most repairs are carried out without removing the engine from the car, namely:
- camshaft chains, tensioners, dampers, sprockets and gears;
- directly camshafts, valve lifters;
- cylinder head;
- engine oil crankcase;
- oil pump;
- crankshaft oil seals;
- flywheel.
Compression check, cleaning of jets and carburetor meshes, filters is carried out without dismantling the engine. On engine variants with electronic injection, the mass air flow sensor and the idle valve often fail.
In case of observation of increased oil consumption or the engine “breathes” (dense smoke from the muffler, oil filler neck and through the dipstick), repairs must be carried out with the engine removed. The reasons may be different:
- "Locked" oil scraper rings;
- critical wear of compression rings;
- the presence of deep scratches on the walls of the cylinders;
- production of cylinders in the form of an ellipse.

The gas distribution mechanism of the engines in question has been time-tested and is considered very reliable. Replacing the timing comes down to replacing both chains, two tensioners, damper, sprockets. The work is not difficult, but painstaking, requiring increased attention and precision.
