Nissan TD27 engine

Today, Nissan is the leader in sales of high-quality and reliable engines compared to classmates, including those running on diesel fuel.

Such popularity is confirmed not only by customer reviews, but also by common advice from craftsmen to highly qualified specialists in installing these engines on gazelles and Russian SUVs instead of domestic ones.

Whether it is worth buying ICE data for your car and how reliable they are will be discussed in this article.

A bit of history

The TD27 motor was first released in 1986. The updated power unit was an in-line four-cylinder engine, which at that time had more solid performance than its counterparts. Nissan TD27 engineThis model was equipped with a turbocharger, which put it on the bar higher than competing diesels: our model has reduced noise and vibration, and the environmental performance has become an order of magnitude higher. Any owner of a car of that time knew - if you need a powerful, unpretentious engine that can be repaired even "on your knee" - you need to choose a car with TD27.

The first car to receive a new diesel heart was the 4th generation minivan Nissan Caravan. Also, these cars were equipped with gasoline internal combustion engines - in this case, the choice was left to motorists: overpay a little for a diesel engine or choose a less powerful gasoline unit with good appetites, the price of which will be 20-30% cheaper.

Our test subject made a strong competition to his fellows - minivans equipped at that time with TD27 had high efficiency, unpretentiousness to the quality of the fuel used than gasoline engines. It is worth noting that the new diesel model was perfect for cars that were designed to transport small loads, often on roads of dubious quality.

The new version of the motor had high torque at low revs, which made it possible to use power more efficiently than competitive counterparts. Since 1992, with a well-established biography, the TD27 has been introduced into production on the Nissan Homy, and later on the Nissan Terrano and a number of other cars. A special group is made up of 4wd Continental cars (all-wheel drive SUVs), where this unit is installed freelance

Technical specifications

Due to the frequent frauds of unscrupulous sellers, many motorists begin their acquaintance with the car by looking for a plate where the series and engine number are indicated - this is absolutely correct, especially when it comes to buying a contract motor. It will not be difficult to find it on our engine - as shown in the photo, it is located on the cylinder block housing on the left, near the turbine and generator.Nissan TD27 engine

Now let's analyze the decoding of the name of our model TD27, in which each character characterizes the design parameters of the power unit:

  • the first letter "T" indicates the motor series;
  • the following character "D" indicates that this is a diesel engine;
  • dividing the last number by 10 we get the working volume of the combustion chamber - on our experimental it is 2,7 cubic meters. cm.

Overview

The TD27 engine is an 8-valve, four-cylinder diesel engine, with a maximum power of 100 horsepower. The total working volume of all cylinders is 2663 cm³. The latter are arranged in one row, and the pistons in them rotate the crankshaft, located in the lower part of the unit on five support bearings. Behind it is a flywheel that serves to transmit torque to the clutch disc of the gearbox. The maximum compression ratio is 22, the piston diameter is 96 mm, the stroke is 92 mm. The motor has a high torque of 231 N * m at a relatively low speed - 2200 per 1 minute. The engine is diesel, so there is no ignition system, the ignition of the combustible mixture occurs due to the pressure that occurs in the combustion chamber. Diesel fuel is used as fuel, the consumption of which varies from 5,8 to 6,8 liters per 100 km.

Fuel system

Features of the diesel fuel system are that the mixing of fuel with air occurs in the combustion chamber. In this case, air enters first, and when the piston approaches the top dead center, when the temperature in the chamber rises, fuel is injected. This ensures better formation of the air-fuel mixture and its combustion.

The fuel system consists of high and low pressure fuel pumps, coarse and fine filters, and injectors. From the tank, a low-pressure pump pumps diesel fuel and feeds it to a coarse filter, after which it is cleaned from large impurities. Directly in front of the injection pump is a fine filter. The high-pressure pump delivers fuel through the atomizers of the injectors, which spray it at a pressure of 1000-1200 atmospheres, which ensures better combustion and greater efficiency. Despite the presence of filters, the atomizers on the nozzles are recommended to be cleaned periodically.

The second component in the power system is the supply of air under the action of the turbine into a special vortex chamber, with subsequent entry into the combustion chamber. The trick of the idea is that the air is swirling at the same time, and during fuel injection, it is better mixed with it.

Lubrication and cooling system

Both systems do not have any special differences from their predecessors. The oil supply is provided by a pump located in the engine sump. The pressure created by it is necessary to lubricate all the rubbing elements of the motor. Cleaning is provided by an oil filter.

The cooling system is of a closed type, the flow of liquid is provided by a thermostat and a pump. According to the passport, antifreeze is recommended for pouring into the system.

Some design features of the TD27

The first thing that catches your eye is the large solid dimensions inherent in all diesel internal combustion engines. The weight of the unit is 250 kg. By today's standards, there is high noise during operation, but at that time the internal combustion engine was much quieter than its predecessors. The main design differences include the following:

  1. The impeller of the cooling fan is driven by a belt - unlike modern versions, with an electric mechanism.
  2. By design, TD27 are vortex chambers - air is mixed with fuel in special chambers with air turbulence. This ensures the best quality air-fuel mixture.
  3. The internal combustion engine has neither a chain nor a timing belt - gears are used as a drive.
  4. The camshaft is lower than standard engines. The high-pressure fuel pump has a gear drive, but after restyling a number of cars were equipped with an electronic fuel pump drive.
  5. Using the turbo mode provides more engine power with less fuel consumption.
  6. The exhaust gas recirculation system ensures complete combustion of diesel fuel, and the particulate filter reduces toxic emissions into the environment.

Motor reliability

All TD27 series are reliable and simple engines, the resource of which is much longer than their classmates. According to the reviews of car owners, the average mileage before overhaul is about 350-400 thousand km. An undoubted plus to reliability is the presence of a timing gear drive - which eliminates damage to the valves and cylinder head when the chain or belt breaks on classmates.Nissan TD27 engine To increase the life of the engine, auto mechanics strongly recommend undergoing timely maintenance, changing the oil every 5-8 thousand kilometers, as written in the manual. With such maintenance, the need for major repairs will not arise soon.

Diesel engines are quite reliable, but there are classic problems during their operation. The most common "sores" TD27:

  1. The engine does not start - in cold weather there are problems with starting on a cold one, but if the internal combustion engine cannot be started at all, it is necessary to check the glow plugs, often the reason is precisely in them. If clicks are heard during starter operation, check the bendix, it may be worn out.
  2. The unit shakes during operation - diesel engines have more vibration than their gasoline counterparts. In this case, it is necessary to check the engine mounts - they may need to be replaced.
  3. The motor troit to the cold and does not gain momentum - it is advisable to go to the service station and check the fuel system in professional conditions: its tightness, as well as nozzles, filters, injection pumps and glow plugs. It is impossible to exclude a drop in compression with high mileage due to wear of the cylinder-piston group, as well as small valve clearances - they may need to be adjusted.
  4. Overheating - the most common causes are damage to the cylinder head gasket, failure of the thermostat or pump.
  5. You should also be more careful with the vacuum - it often fails, which affects the operation of the brake system.

Maintainability

Despite all of the above problems, TD27 motors are considered simple and reliable in maintenance, they are much less likely to be reworked and tuned. A simple and at the same time reliable design principle ensures the ability to service them in garage conditions. The presence of sleeves in the block greatly facilitates the overhaul procedure. The motors are quite versatile - they fit perfectly with manual transmission and automatic transmission, they are often installed on a UAZ or a gazelle instead of a regular internal combustion engine.

It is worth noting that the large dimensions of the diesel engine do not always allow you to quickly get to some components and assemblies, especially in the rear and lower parts or in areas covered by the turbine and its components. In case you need to remove the entire engine for a swap or its overhaul, you cannot do without the equipment of a specialized workshop.

Despite the listed negative points, the fact that such complex manipulations are required relatively rarely is encouraging, and spare parts are quite easy to order at any specialized auto shop.

It will be fair to point out the positive and negative aspects of the TD27 model.

The most common problems faced by the owners of diesel internal combustion engines:

The highlights of the service are:

What kind of oil to pour

The modern oil market offers a wide range of products - from cheap brands to well-known brands. Despite the low cost of some oils, the manufacturer strongly recommends using only specialized brands specified in the operating instructions and suitable for your engine brand. According to the manual, the following brands are suitable for the TD27:

You should make a choice in favor of trusted suppliers - in this case, the risk of running into a fake is minimal. Despite the different viscosity, the oil is optimally suited to the temperature regime of the internal combustion engine, depending on the weather conditions and does not lose its properties - a sufficient amount of oil film is produced to prevent wear of parts. Experts recommend replacing it every 5-8 thousand km.
