Nissan VQ35HR engine

The VQ35HR engine from the Japanese manufacturer Nissan was first announced on August 22, 2006. It is a modified version of the VQ35DE power plant. If the previous one was used on Nissan cars, then the VQ35HR is placed mainly on Infiniti.

It received significant changes compared to its predecessor. In particular, it has a different camshaft timing system, a redesigned cylinder block with longer connecting rods and new lightweight pistons.Nissan VQ35HR engine

List of cars with this engine

This modification of the VQ35 series engine is successful - it has been used since 2006 and has even been installed on new 4th generation sedans of the present time. List of car models with this engine:

  1. First generation Infiniti EX35 (2007-2013)
  2. Second generation Infiniti FX35 (2008-2012)
  3. Fourth generation Infiniti G35 (2006-2009)
  4. Fourth generation Infiniti Q50 (2014 - present)

This ICE is installed on Nissan cars:

  1. Fairlady Z (2002-2008)
  2. Escape (2004-2009)
  3. Skyline (2006–present)
  4. Cima (2012 - present)
  5. Fuga Hybrid (2010–present)

The motor is also used on Renault cars: Vel Satis, Espace, Latitude, Samsung SM7, Laguna Coupé.

Features of the VQ35HR motor and the difference from the VQ35DE

HR - refers to the VQ35 series. When it was created, Nissan tried to improve the glory of the units of this series due to the lightness and high response to the gas pedal. In fact, the HR is an improved version of the already good VQ35DE engine.

The first feature and difference from the VQ35DE is the asymmetric piston skirts and the increased length of the connecting rods to 152.2 mm (from 144.2 mm). This relieved pressure on the cylinder walls and reduced friction and therefore vibration at high speeds.Nissan VQ35HR engine

The manufacturer also used a different cylinder block (it turned out to be 8 mm higher than the block in the DE engine) and added a new block booster holding the crankshaft. This also managed to reduce vibrations and make the structure more rigid.

The next feature is the lowering of the center of gravity by 15 mm downwards. Such a minor change has simplified driving as a whole. Another solution was to increase the compression ratio to 10.6:1 (in the DE version 10.3:1) - because of this, the engine became faster, but at the same time more sensitive to the quality and knock resistance of the fuel. Consequently, the HR engine has become more responsive compared to the previous modification (DE), and the average car based on it picks up speed up to 100 km / h 1 second faster than its competitor.

It is believed that HR engines are installed by the manufacturer only on vehicles based on the Front-Midship platform. A feature of this platform is the displacement of the engine behind the front axle, which provides an ideal weight distribution along the axes and improves handling.

All these changes made it possible to achieve not only better handling and dynamism, but also a 10% reduction in fuel consumption. This means that for every 10 liters of fuel used, the HR engine saves 1 liter compared to the DE.

Maslozhor - an actual problem

The entire series of motors received similar problems. The most relevant is the “disease” with increased oil consumption.

In VQ35 power plants, catalysts become the cause of the oil burn - they are extremely sensitive to the quality of gasoline, and when using diluted low-quality fuel, they are more likely to become unusable.

The result was clogging of the lower catalysts with ceramic dust. It will penetrate the engine and wear down the cylinder walls. This leads to a decrease in compression, increased oil consumption and interruptions in the operation of the engine - it starts to stall and is difficult to start. For these reasons, it is extremely important to buy gasoline from trusted gas stations and not to use fuel with reduced knock resistance.

Such a problem is serious and requires a comprehensive solution, up to a major overhaul or complete replacement of the internal combustion engine with a contract one. Note that the manufacturer allows a small oil consumption - up to 500 grams per 1000 km, but ideally it should not be. Most owners of cars with this engine indicate the absence of even the slightest lubricant consumption from replacement to replacement (that is, after 10-15 thousand km). In any case, it is necessary to monitor the oil level - this will avoid oil starvation in the event of an oil burn. Unfortunately, the oil pressure warning light comes on late.

Other VQ35 engine problems

The second problem, which is more related to the VQ35DE motors, but can also be observed in the VQ35HR version (judging by the reviews), is overheating. It is rare and results in head drooping and valve cover warpage. If there are air pockets in the cooling system or leaks in the radiators, then overheating will occur.

Many car owners operate the engine incorrectly, keeping the revs low. If you constantly drive with revolutions at around 2000, then over time it will coke (this applies to most engines in general). Avoiding the problem is easy - the engine sometimes needs to be revved up to 5000 rpm.

There are no other systematic problems of the power plant. The VQ35HR engine itself is very reliable, it has a huge resource and, with normal care and operation, is able to “run” more than 500 thousand kilometers. Cars based on this engine are recommended for purchase due to its efficiency and serviceability.
