Of course, not one industry can do without flaws, but when purchasing, for example, a model from Nissan, you can not worry about reliability and durability at all - these qualities are always high.
A fairly popular power unit for some Nissan models is the well-known QG15DE engine, to which a lot of space is devoted to the network. The motor belongs to a whole series of engines, starting with QG13DE and ending with QG18DEN.
Short story
The Nissan QG15DE cannot be called a separate element of the engine series; for its creation, the base of the more practical QG16DE, which was distinguished by increased consumption, was used. The designers reduced the cylinder diameter by 2.4 mm and installed a different piston system.
Such design improvements have led to an increase in the compression ratio to 9.9, as well as more economical fuel consumption. At the same time, power increased, although not so noticeably - 109 hp. at 6000 rpm.
The engine was operated for a short period of time - only 6 years, from 2000 to 2006, while being constantly refined and improved. For example, 2 years after the release of the first unit, the QG15DE engine received a variable valve timing system, and the mechanical throttle was replaced with an electronic one. On the first models, an EGR emission reduction system was installed, but in 2002 it was removed.
Like other Nissan engines, the QG15DE has an important design flaw - it does not have hydraulic lifters, which means that valve adjustment will be required over time. Also, a timing chain with a sufficiently long service life is installed on these motors, which ranges from 130000 to 150000 km.
As mentioned earlier, the QG15DE unit was produced for only 6 years. After that, the HR15DE took its place, with more improved technical characteristics and performance.

The main difference from the power units of other manufacturers is the use of high-quality cast iron for the manufacture of the block, while all other companies prefer more brittle aluminum.
When choosing a car with a QG15DE engine, you should pay attention to economical fuel consumption - 8.6 liters per 100 km when driving in the city. A fairly good indicator for a working volume of 1498 cm3.
To determine the engine number, for example, when re-registering a car, just look at the right side of the cylinder block of the unit. There is a special area with a stamped number. Very often, the engine number is covered with a special varnish, otherwise a layer of rust may form very soon.
Reliability of the QG15DE engine

The QG15DE motor is quite reliable, due to the following factors:
- Fuel injection system. The carburetor, due to the lack of electronic components, allows you to win in acceleration and jerk from a standstill, but even the usual clogging of the jets will lead to a stalled engine.
- Cast iron cylinder block and cylinder head cover. A material with a fairly long service life, but not loving sudden temperature changes. In engines with a cast-iron block, only high-quality coolant should be poured, antifreeze is best.
- High compression ratio with small cylinder volume. As a conclusion - a longer operating life of the engine without loss of power.
The engine resource was not indicated by the manufacturer, but from the reviews of motorists on the Internet, we can conclude that it is at least 250000 km. With timely maintenance and non-aggressive driving, it can be extended to 300000 km, after which it is necessary to carry out a major overhaul.
The QG15DE power unit is absolutely not suitable as a basis for tuning. This motor has average technical characteristics and is designed only for a calm and even ride.
List of main faults and methods for their elimination
There are the most frequent breakdowns of the QG15DE engine, but with high-quality and timely maintenance, they can be minimized or avoided.
Stretched timing chain
It is very rare to find a broken timing chain, but a more common occurrence is its stretching. Wherein:
- The engine starts poorly or does not start at all. At the same time, it is necessary that the starter perform a long work, which also affects its service life.
- The appearance of floating speed at idle.
- Failures are possible, very similar to the consequences of a failed spark plug.
- Increased noise level during engine operation.
Motor won't start
The problem is very common, and if the timing chain has nothing to do with it, then you should pay attention to such an element as a throttle valve. On engines, the production of which began in 2002 (Nissan Sunny), electronic dampers were installed, the cover of which requires periodic cleaning.
The second reason could be a clogged fuel pump mesh. If cleaning it did not help, then most likely the fuel pump itself failed. To replace it, the help of service station specialists is not always required; this procedure is done by hand.
And as the last option - a failed ignition coil.
Whistle
Most often occurs when working at low speeds. The reason for this whistle is the alternator belt. You can check its integrity directly on the engine, a visual inspection is enough. If there are microcracks or scuffs, the alternator belt together with the rollers should be replaced.
A signaling device that has become unusable is the alternator belt, the battery discharge lamp can become. In this case, the belt simply slips around the pulley and the generator does not complete the required number of revolutions. When carrying out repairs, you should also check the crankshaft sensor.
Harsh jerks at low revs
Particularly sensitive at the beginning of the ride and when the first gear is engaged, the car also twitches during acceleration. The problem is not critical, it will completely allow you to get to the house or to the nearest service station, but the solution will require the involvement of an injector setup wizard. Most likely, you need to flash the ECU system or see how the main adjustment sensors work. This problem occurs both on models with mechanics and automatic transmissions.
Short life of catalysts
The consequence of a failed catalyst is black smoke from the exhaust pipe (these are valve stem seals or rings that have not become unusable, as well as a malfunction of the lambda probe), and an increase in CO levels. After the appearance of black thick smoke, the catalyst should be replaced immediately.
Short-lived components of the cooling system
The cooling system for the QG15DE motor does not have a long service life. For example, after replacing the thermostat, after a while, drops of coolant can be found, especially in the place where the candle well seal is located. Often the pump or temperature sensor fails.
What oil should be poured into the engine
