S15 engine for agricultural tractor from Andoria. What is worth knowing about it?

The engine was developed by the designers of the Diesel Engine Plant in Andrychow. The S320 and S321 blocks, which had fairly similar technical characteristics, served as the reference. The S15 engine was mainly used in agricultural machinery. We present the most important information about the drive from Andrychov.

Technical data – how did the Andrychów drive differ?

The S15 engine is self-igniting with direct injection. The unit was diesel and developed a maximum power of 11 kW at 2200 rpm. and maximum torque of 55 Nm at 1500 rpm. 

The single-cylinder S15 engine had a horizontal arrangement of cylinders with a bore of 102 mm and a piston stroke of 120 mm and a displacement of 980 cm³. Andoria engineers decided to use overhead valve timing and manual start.

S15 engine operation

The S15 engine uses splash and pressure circulation lubrication. The maximum amount of oil in the engine ranged from 4 to 6 liters at a flow rate of 4,1 g/kWh. The designers of the unit also decided to install a gear oil pump.

In terms of cooling issues, a water-based evaporative version was used and the tank capacity was 24 liters. Recommended operating temperature is 80°C to 95°C. 

Fuel supply - design solutions

For the S 15 engine, diesel fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 1% could be used. A sectional fuel pump and a WJ150.8 needle injector were used. The designers have also equipped this unit with the WP111X paper filter. 

1HC102/R1 engine - engine version with electrical accessories

In the 1HC102/R1 variant, some changes were made related to the installation of electrical equipment. This S15 engine is equipped with a 5kW R1,32K left hand starter. Accessories also included a 120W generator, a 12V 120Ah battery and an electrical board with voltage regulator, ammeter and fuse box. 

What cars used the S15 engine?

The drive unit has found wide application in farms. It was also used in cleaning work as well as construction sites. So, the S15 engine powered threshers, mills and presses, as well as machines (spreaders and plows). 

The internal combustion engine performed very well in basic work. It also did not fail at lower temperatures and was easily repaired. However, the C-15 engine generated a lot of impurities. The most popular example of using the described design was the iconic CAM tractor, on which the 1HC102 / R1 unit was installed.
