S32 engine - on which motorcycle can you find this design? Is the SHL M11 the only bike with this engine?

The Polish automotive industry has a very rich history, especially when it comes to motorcycles. The M11 SHL Lux featured an iconic engine design. High quality plastic cylinder and 173cc or 175cc capacity are the main features of SHL motorcycles and competing WSK or WFM motorcycles. When developing the modern C-32 engine, engineers took an example from the earlier C-06 design base, which was used in German motorcycles. S32 engine - what did it look like? What is its technical specification?

The S-32 engines installed on the SHL (and not only) were created on the basis of German motorcycle developments. The increase in volume to 173 cm³ was achieved by increasing the cylinder diameter. The new engine, along with a larger cylinder and a completely redesigned head, was less prone to failure and had better performance. Since 1966, along with an aluminum cylinder, a solid cast iron sleeve has been used in production. This made the 175cc engine lighter and more efficient.

New unit and its improvements

Since 1967, the SHL M11W has been equipped with a completely new drive design. This S32 engine was created by engineer Wiesław Wiatrak and gave it the catchy name W-2A Wiatr. Slightly larger volume up to 174 cm³ and power by 12 hp. are the main features of this engine. Compared to the base S32 engine, the difference was 3 hp. This greatly improved the dynamics of the motorcycle. The S32 engine itself was produced at the Zakłady Metalowe Dezamet plant in Nowa Demba.

S32 engine - Lux version production

The engines we describe were made for the successors of the SHL M06. The M11 Lux models were introduced to the Polish market in 1963. The motorcycles of this series were slightly better equipped and had, for example. with an enlarged fuel tank) and chrome shock absorbers. The price of a motorcycle with an S32 engine in those days was just over 15 XNUMX. zloty. Interestingly, some motorcycles from Poland went to the American market. Then, in 1962, India bought a license to produce M11 models with an S32 engine. The SHL model in this version was produced in this country until 2005 under the name Rajdoot.

General data on S32 engines in SHL

Here is the specification of the S32 engine, which is installed on the popular SHL models in our country.

  1. The cylinder diameter reached about 61 mm, and the piston stroke of the Wind version was as much as 59,5 mm.
  2. The engine displacement varied from 173 to 174 cm³ depending on the version.
  3. The highest engine speed was achieved on the S-32 Wiatr (up to 5450 rpm).
  4. The use of a wet four-plate clutch ensures driving comfort.
  5. The S32 engine developed a maximum torque of 1,47 Nm at 3500 rpm.

The design of this engine was simple, which allowed any repair to be carried out practically on the spot. For motorcycles with the S32 engine, fuel consumption did not exceed the average value of 2,9 to 3,2 l / 100 km.

As you can see, the unit used in Polish motorcycles many years ago was very efficient at the time. Are you looking for a classic motorcycle with exactly this engine model?
