Toyota 1JZ-GE engine
The 1JZ-GE engine is undoubtedly a Toyota legend. It was created in 1990 and became the first representative of the JZ line, installed exclusively on rear-wheel drive models with automatic transmission. Throughout its history, the engine was produced at the Japanese Tahan plant, owned by Toyota Motor, until 2007.
Toyota 1JZ-GE as a whole has established itself as a stable, safe and powerful enough engine. Two main series of the motor can be distinguished - 1990 and 1995 with an integrated VVT-i system with variable valve timing.

- Toyota 1JZ-GE has a block with 6 longitudinal (in-line) cylinders and 24 valves, 4 of which are per cylinder. There is no hydraulic compensator;
- The ignition system is distributor (first generation) and reel-to-reel (second generation: 1 coil = 2 candles);
- The torque on the motor is 250 N * m = 4000 rpm;
- Fuel consumption on the highway - 8.3 liters, and in the city 14.2 liters (for example, Toyota Mark 2 1999 release);
- Gas distribution mechanism - belt;
- The engine operating life declared by the manufacturer is 350.000 km;
- The piston diameter is 86 mm, the stroke is 71,5;
- The injection system in the unit is distributed;
- Power is 200 hp, compression ratio is 10: 1.
Modifications
1JZ-FSE D4 - produced from 2000 to 2007.
1JZ-GTE is the only version with turbines. In the model, the power has been improved, the compression ratio has increased (9), the torque has increased significantly (up to 378 N * m).
1JZ-GE problems
It is better to always keep the ignition system completely dry, it is very susceptible to moisture;
Increased oil consumption at high mileage due to wear of the oil scraper rings;
Quite short service life of the VVT-i valve;
The pump also runs a little, the valves require periodic adjustment.
Tuning
Tuning a naturally aspirated engine is always a rather dubious question in terms of the result. You can change the camshafts, the throttle, flash the computer, but you will not get a solid increase.
Installing a turbine or compressor on an atmomotor will be much more expensive and less reliable than a swap on a turbocharged version of the 1JZ-GTE.
