The desire of Japanese engine builders to improve their products has led to the creation of a new model in the 2GR series engine line. The 2GR-FXS engine is designed for installation in hybrid versions of Toyota vehicles. In fact, it is a hybrid version of the previously developed 2GR-FKS.

Description

The 2GR-FXS engine was created for the Toyota Highlander. Installed from 2016 to the present. Almost simultaneously, the American Toyota brand Lexus (RX 450h AL20) became the owner of this motor. The manufacturer is Toyota Motor Corporation.

The uniqueness lies in the fact that the engines of this series were not equipped with a turbocharger, and only gasoline is used as fuel. Despite the impressive volume (3,5 liters), fuel consumption on the highway does not exceed 5,5 l / 100 km.

The cylinder block is made of aluminum alloy. V-shaped. It has 6 cylinders with cast iron liners. Combined oil pan - upper part made of aluminum alloy, lower part - steel. There is space for oil jets to provide cooling and lubrication to the pistons.

Pistons are light alloy. The skirt contains an anti-friction coating. They are connected to the connecting rods by floating fingers.

The crankshaft and connecting rods are made of high-strength steel by forging.

Cylinder head - aluminum. The camshafts are mounted in a separate housing. The valve drive is equipped with hydraulic valve clearance compensators.

The intake manifold is aluminum.

The timing drive is two-stage, chain, with hydraulic chain tensioners. Lubrication is carried out by special oil nozzles.

The motor, according to the reviews of the owners, is quite reliable, subject to the manufacturer's recommendations for its operation. However, there are disadvantages inherent in the entire 2GR series:

  • increased noise of the VVT-I couplings of the Dual VVT-i system;
  • increased fuel consumption after 100 thousand kilometers;
  • bending of the valves when the timing chain is broken;
  • reduction in idle speed.

Additionally, there is information about the bending of the valves when the chain is dropped from the VVT-i sprocket. Such a malfunction is possible when unscrewing the phase regulator bolts.

Idle speed becomes unstable due to contamination of the throttle valves. Cleaning them once every 1 thousand km will cancel this problem.

The weak points of the motor include the water pump, the cylinder-piston group and the tendency to foul the throttle valves. As for the water pump, it should be noted that the resource of its work is 50-70 thousand km of the car's run. Around this stage, the destruction of the seal occurs. Coolant starts to leak.

CPG requires the use of high quality oils. Replacing with cheaper brands leads to increased wear of pistons and cylinders. Throttle valves were mentioned earlier.

There is no specific data on maintainability due to the relatively short period of its operation. At the same time, there are recommendations on replacing the engine with a contract engine when working out the resource. Despite this, the presence of cast-iron sleeves creates the prerequisites for the possibility of a major overhaul.

Thus, we can conclude: the Toyota 2GR-FXS engine has high power, reliability and endurance. But at the same time, it requires strict adherence to the manufacturer's recommendations for its operation.

A few words about tuning

The 2GR-FXS unit can become even more powerful if tuned by installing a turbo kit compressor (TRD, HKS). Pistons are changed at the same time (Wiseco Piston for compression ratio 9) and nozzles 440 cc. Work at a specialized car service for one day, and the engine power will increase to 350 hp.

Other types of tuning are impractical. Firstly, an insignificant result of the work (chip tuning), and secondly (installation of a more powerful compressor), this is an unjustified high cost and a reason for frequent technical problems with the engine.

The Toyota 2GR-FXS engine occupies a worthy place in the 2GR line in all main technical and economic indicators.
