The 8GR-FXS engine is another novelty of Japanese engine builders. The model developed and put into production is an analogue of the well-known 2GR-FCS.
Description
The power unit of the new generation 8GR-FXS longitudinal arrangement is characterized by D-4S mixed fuel injection, the use of a proprietary VVT-iW variable valve timing system, and Atkinson cycle operation. Released since October 2017. Crown has been installed on Toyota since 2018, on Lexuses - a year earlier.
The 8GR-FXS is an 8th generation V-block engine with aluminum cylinder head, twin camshafts (engine family). F - DOHC valve train layout, X - Atkinson cycle hybrid, S - D-4S combined fuel injection system.
Fuel injection system with combined injection. The use of D-4S contributes to an increase in power, torque, fuel economy and significantly reduces the emission of harmful gases into the atmosphere. At the same time, it should be noted that the complexity of the fuel supply system can become a source of additional malfunctions.
The valve mechanism is two-shaft, overhead valve.

Reliability, weaknesses
It is still too early to judge specifically the reliability of the 8GR-FXS internal combustion engine due to the short operating time (fault statistics are being analyzed). But the first problems have already been partially voiced. Traditionally, the GR series models, the weak point is the water pump. Extraneous noises are noted during the operation of the VVT-I couplings of the Dual VVT-iW system, ignition coils.
There is a single information about a small oil burner, and from the very beginning of the operation of the engine. But it is too early to consider all the listed shortcomings as a problem of the power unit, since they can arise as a result of the errors made by the motorist himself during operation.
It is unnecessary to talk about the maintainability of the internal combustion engine - the manufacturer does not provide for a major overhaul of the unit. But the presence of cast-iron liners in the cylinder block gives hope for its possibility.
About tuning
The 8GR-FXS motor, like all others, is subject to tuning. According to available information, chip tuning was tested by installing a pedal-box module from DTE-systems (DTE PEDALBOX) - made in Germany.
It must be remembered that this type of tuning does not increase engine power, but only corrects the factory engine control settings. Although, according to some owners, chip tuning practically does not give any noticeable changes.
There is no data on other types of tuning (atmospheric, installation of a turbo compressor with simultaneous replacement of pistons), since the motor appeared on the market quite recently.
Engine Oil
The manufacturer recommends changing the oil after 10 thousand kilometers or once a year. The most acceptable option is the use of synthetic lubricant Toyota Motor Oil SN GF-5 5W-30. DXG 5W-30 can be used as a substitute. When choosing an oil, you need to pay attention to its quality class (indicated by the symbols SN). In case of increased consumption (“oil burner”), it is recommended to switch to varieties with a denser consistency - 10W-40. For example, Shell Helix 10W-40.

The only conclusion is that despite the existing shortcomings, Toyota has created a relatively simple, reliable, at the same time powerful and economical engine.
