A special power unit has been developed for the first VAZ minicar. The recently created and put into production VAZ-2108 was taken as a basis.

Description

The AvtoVAZ engine builders were given a rather difficult task - to create a compact engine for the new model of the Lada 1111 Oka concern.

Strict requirements were imposed on the engine - it must be simple in design, reliable in operation and have high maintainability.

After not entirely successful attempts to copy foreign small-capacity power plants, the plant's engineers decided to create a motor based on their engines.

For the economy of production and the reduction in the cost of the unit itself, the already produced VAZ-2108 was taken as the base model.

In 1988, the designers presented the first copy of the created VAZ-1111 engine. The sample was approved by the management and entered mass production. The release of the motor continued until 1996. During this time, the unit was repeatedly upgraded, but the design scheme remained the same.

VAZ-1111 is a two-cylinder gasoline aspirated engine with a volume of 0,65 liters, a capacity of 30 liters. with and a torque of 44 Nm.

In fact, it is half of the 1,3 liter VAZ-2108 engine. From 1988 to 1996 it was installed on the Lada Oka.

The cylinder block is cast from ductile iron. Not sleeved. The cylinders are bored out in the body of the block. At the bottom there are three crankshaft bearings.

The crankshaft is made of magnesium cast iron. Includes three main and two connecting rod journals with their high-precision processing.

The four cheeks of the shaft act as a counterweight in order to reduce the inertial forces of the second order (damping the vibration of torsional vibrations). Additionally, balancing shafts mounted in the engine and receiving rotation from the crankshaft serve for the same purpose.

Another feature is the ability to flip the flywheel. With wear of the teeth of the crown on one side, it became possible to use the unworn part.

Aluminum pistons, made according to the traditional scheme. They have three rings, two of which are compression, one is oil scraper. Floating finger. The bottom has no special recesses for the valves. Therefore, upon contact with the latter, their bending is inevitable.

The block head is aluminum. In the upper part are the camshaft and valve mechanism. Each cylinder has two valves.

A feature of the timing mechanism is the absence of camshaft bearings. They are replaced by the working surfaces of the attachment beds. Thus, when they are worn to the limit, it is necessary to replace the entire cylinder head.

Timing belt drive. The belt resource is not high - after a run of 60 thousand km it must be replaced.

Combined lubrication system. The oil pump is interchangeable with the pump from VAZ-2108, and the oil filter is from VAZ-2105. A feature of the system is the strict prohibition of overflowing oil above the norm (2,5 l).

The fuel supply system is carbureted on the VAZ-1111, but there was also an injection system (on the VAZ-11113). The fuel pump differs from the base model in the direction and diameter of the fittings. In addition, its drive has received a change - instead of electric, it has become mechanical.

Electronic ignition, non-contact. A characteristic feature is that voltage is applied to both candles at the same time.

In general, the VAZ-1111 turned out to be compact, quite powerful and economical. Such indicators are achieved thanks to an improved combustion chamber, an increased compression ratio, and an optimal selection of adjustments for fuel supply and ignition systems.

Additionally, mechanical losses are reduced by reducing the number of cylinders.

Features of the device engine VAZ-11113

VAZ-11113 is an improved version of VAZ-1111. The appearance of the motors is the same, except for the injection version.

The internal filling on the VAZ-11113 has undergone significant changes. First, the piston diameter has been increased from 76 to 81 mm. As a result, volume (749 cm³), power (33 hp) and torque (50 Nm) have slightly increased. As you can see, there are no significant changes in the technical characteristics.

Secondly, to improve heat removal from rubbing surfaces, it was necessary to design an additional cooling system for the combustion chamber. Without it, jamming of the pistons was observed, scuffing of the cylinder walls increased and other malfunctions caused by engine overheating appeared.

Equipping the power supply system with an injector has not found wide application. In 2005, a limited batch of such engines was produced, but it turned out to be a trial and the only one, since there were many problems and the need for improvements.

In general, the VAZ-11113 is identical to the VAZ-1111.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

Reliability

Despite the small size and the presence of weaknesses, car owners consider the VAZ-1111 a reliable, economical and unpretentious engine. Numerous reviews are a clear confirmation of what has been said.

For example, Vladimir writes:… mileage 83400 km … satisfied, I don’t know any problems. Starts easily at -25. I change the oil after 5-6 thousand km ...».

Dmitriy: "… the engine is reliable and unpretentious. During the period of use, I never climbed into it. It spins pretty fast. The dynamics are not bad, especially for me - a lover of a calm and careful ride. If necessary, the car accelerates to 120 km / h. Fuel consumption is small. On 10 liters in the city you can drive an average of 160-170 km ...».

Most motorists note that engine breakdowns do not occur often, mainly due to an oversight of the driver himself. Constant attention to the engine - and there will be no problems. You can read about it in almost every review.

Of course, there are also negative comments. An example of such a review from NEMO: “... forever dying commutator and twin coil, overflowing carburetor, in which needles are consumables, but starting at -42 in the parking lot is sure ...". But such (negative) reviews are few.

When modernizing the engine, designers put the reliability factor at the forefront. So, after another revision, the crankshaft and camshafts became more reliable.

The mileage declared by the manufacturer also indicates the reliability of the motor.

Weak spots

Despite the reduction in the dimensions of the motor, it was not possible to avoid weak points.

Vibration. Despite constructive attempts (installation of balancing shafts, a special crankshaft), it was not possible to completely eliminate this phenomenon on the engine. The main reason for the increased vibration is the two-cylinder design of the unit.

Often, motorists are worried about the impossibility of starting the engine “hot”. Here, in most cases, the fault lies with the fuel pump, or rather, its problematic diaphragm.

For a successful start, you need to wait a while (until the pump cools down or, in extreme cases, put a wet rag on it). It is advisable to replace the pump diaphragm.

Possibility of overheating. Occurs due to the water pump or thermostat. The low quality of components, and sometimes careless assembly, underlie the failure of these units.

The car owner can only control the coolant temperature more carefully and replace the faulty components as soon as possible.

Knocks in the engine compartment when the engine is running. The cause must be sought in unregulated valves.

In addition, when the engine warms up after it is started, the balance shafts usually knock. This is a design feature of the motor that will take some getting used to.

Burnt cylinder head gasket. It can occur due to a manufacturing defect associated with the installation or if the head fastening is incorrectly (not completely) tightened.

For the VAZ-11113 engine, an additional weak point is failures in the operation of electronics, especially sensors. The problem can only be solved by a car service.

Maintainability

Like all VAZ engines, the maintainability of the VAZ-1111 is high. In discussions on the forums, car owners repeatedly emphasize this positive opportunity.

For example, Nord2492 from Krasnoyarsk says this about it: “... unpretentious in repair, in the garage for the whole day you can sort / remove / put everything ...».

To restore a large number of components and parts, you can safely take from the base model VAZ-2108. The exceptions are specific components - crankshaft, camshaft, etc.

There are no problems with the search for spare parts for restoration. In any specialized store you can always find the right one. When purchasing, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer of the purchased part or assembly.

These days, the aftermarket is flooded with counterfeit products. The Chinese are especially good at this. It is fair to say that our unscrupulous manufacturers also supply a lot of fakes to the market.

The quality of repairs depends entirely on the use of only original spare parts. You cannot replace them with analogues. Otherwise, the repair work will have to be repeated, and already in a larger volume. Accordingly, the cost of the second repair will be higher.

With a completely worn out motor, it is advisable to consider the option of purchasing a contract engine. Their prices are not high, depending on the year of manufacture and the configuration of attachments.

The VAZ-1111 engine proved to be quite acceptable in its class. With timely and full service, it does not cause problems for car owners.
