In the early 90s, the Volga engine builders put on stream another development of the power unit.

Description

In 1994, the engineers of the AvtoVAZ concern developed another engine of the tenth family, which received the VAZ-2111 index. For a number of reasons, it was only possible to launch its production in 1997. During the release process (until 2014), the motor was upgraded, which did not touch its mechanical part.

VAZ-2111 is a 1,5-liter in-line four-cylinder gasoline aspirated engine with a capacity of 78 hp. with and a torque of 116 Nm.

ICE VAZ-2111 was installed on Lada cars:

  • 21083 (1997-2003);
  • 21093 (1997-2004);
  • 21099 (1997-2004);
  • 2110 (1997-2004);

  • 2113 (2004-2007);
  • 2114 (2003-2007);
  • 2115 (2000-2007).

The engine is designed on the basis of the VAZ-2108 engine, is an exact copy of the VAZ-2110, with the exception of the power system.

The cylinder block is cast from ductile iron, not lined. The cylinders are bored out in the body of the block. There are two repair sizes in the tolerance, i.e., it allows you to perform two major repairs with cylinder bores.

The crankshaft is made of special cast iron and has five bearings. A special feature is the modified shape of the shaft counterweights, due to which they act as a balancing mechanism (suppress torsional vibrations).

Connecting rods steel, forged. A steel-bronze bushing is pressed into the upper head.

Aluminum alloy pistons, cast. The piston pin is of a floating type, therefore it is fixed with retaining rings. Three rings are installed on the skirt, two of which are compression and one oil scraper.

The cylinder head is aluminum, with one camshaft and 8 valves. The thermal gap is adjusted by manually selecting shims, since hydraulic compensators are not provided.

The camshaft is cast iron, has five bearings.

Timing belt drive. When the belt breaks, the valves do not bend.

The power system is an injector (distributed fuel injection with electronic control).

Combined lubrication system. Gear type oil pump.

The cooling system is liquid, closed type. The water pump (pump) is a centrifugal type, driven by a timing belt.

Thus, the VAZ-2111 is fully consistent with the classical design scheme of the VAZ ICE.

The main differences between VAZ-2111-75 and VAZ-2111-80

The VAZ-2111-80 engine was installed on export models of VAZ-2108-99 cars. The difference from the VAZ-2111 consisted in the additional presence of holes in the cylinder block for mounting the knock sensor, ignition module and generator.

In addition, the profile of the camshaft cams has been slightly changed. As a result of this refinement, the valve lift height has changed.

The power system has changed. In the Euro 2 configuration, fuel injection has become pair-parallel.

The result of these changes was an improvement in the performance of the motor.

The differences between the internal combustion engine VAZ-2111-75 were primarily in the operation of the power supply system. The phased fuel injection system made it possible to increase the environmental standards for exhaust gas emissions to EURO 3.

The engine oil pump received minor changes. Its cover has become aluminum with a mounting hole for installing the DPKV.

Thus, the main difference between these engine models and the VAZ-2111 was the modernization of fuel injection.

Reliability

The opinions of car owners about the reliability of the engine, as usual, are divided. For example, Anatoly (Lutsk region) writes: “... The engine pleased with peppy acceleration and efficiency. The unit is quite noisy, but this is typical for budget cars". He is fully supported by Oleg (Vologda region): “... I have a dozen since 2005, it is operated daily, it rides comfortably, it accelerates pleasantly. No complaints about the engine.».

The second group of motorists is the exact opposite of the first. So, Sergey (Ivanovo region) says that: “... for a year of operation, I had to change all the hoses of the cooling system, the clutch twice and much more". Similarly, Alexei (Moscow region) was unlucky: “... almost immediately I had to change the generator relay, the XX sensor, the ignition module ...».

In assessing the reliability of the motor, oddly enough, both sides of motorists are right. And that's why. If the engine is treated as recommended by the manufacturer, then reliability is beyond doubt.

There are examples when the mileage of the motor without major repairs exceeded 367 thousand km. At the same time, you can meet a lot of drivers who, out of all the maintenance, only fill in gasoline and oil in a timely manner. Naturally, their engines are "extremely unreliable."

Weak spots

The weak points include the "triple" of the motor. This is an extremely unpleasant symptom for the car owner. In most cases, the cause of this phenomenon is the burning of one or even several valves.

But, it happens that this trouble is caused by a failure in the ignition module. The true cause of the “triple” of the engine can be identified at the service station when diagnosing the engine.

Another serious malfunction is the occurrence of unauthorized knocks. There are several reasons for the occurrence of extraneous noise. Most often the fault is not adjusted valves.

At the same time, the "authors" of knocks can be pistons, or main or connecting rod bearings (liners) of the crankshaft. In this case, the engine requires serious repairs. Diagnostics at a car service will help identify this problem.

And the last of the serious problems is overheating of the internal combustion engine. Occurs as a result of failure of components and parts of the cooling system. The thermostat and fan are not stable. Failure of these components guarantees overheating of the motor. Therefore, it is extremely important for the driver to monitor not only the road, but also the instruments while driving.

The remaining weaknesses of the engine are less critical. For example, the appearance of floating speed during operation of the motor. As a rule, this phenomenon occurs when a sensor fails - DMRV, IAC or TPS. It is enough to find and replace the faulty part.

Oil and coolant leaks. Mostly they are insignificant, but they cause a lot of trouble. Leaks of technical fluids can be eliminated by simply tightening the seal fasteners in the place where they appear, or by replacing a faulty stuffing box.

Maintainability

VAZ-2111 has a very high maintainability. Most car owners carry out restoration in garage conditions. This is facilitated by a simple motor design device.

Changing oil, consumables, and even simple components and mechanisms (pump, timing belt, etc.) is easily done on your own, sometimes even without the involvement of assistants.

There are no problems finding spare parts. The only trouble that may arise when buying is the possibility of acquiring counterfeit parts. Especially often there are fakes from Chinese manufacturers.

At the same time, a contract engine can be purchased at a low price.

The eight-valve VAZ-2111 is very popular among motorists. Reliability with timely maintenance and compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations, ease of repair and maintenance, high technical and economic indicators made the engine in demand - it can be found on Kalina, Grant, Largus, as well as on other AvtoVAZ models.
