Internal combustion engine Mazda L5-VE

The production of the L5-VE engine started in 2008 in Mexico as an alternative to its smaller predecessor, the 2,3-liter V3-LE. First of all, it was installed until 2012 on the second generation Mazda 6 GH, as well as on the later Mazda CX-7.

The last car to be equipped with the L5 was one of the Mazda 3 configurations, the SP25.

Thanks to the upgrade of the intake system, better balancing of the steel crankshaft and reworking of the gas distribution mechanism, the new unit, while maintaining almost the same power parameters, has become more economical, and the use of modern materials in the manufacture of the cylinder block has a positive effect on the heat resistance and smoothness of the pistons, increasing the reliability of the entire systems.Internal combustion engine Mazda L5-VE

Technical specifications

Continuing the comparison of the two engines in numbers, it should be noted that in relation to the V3, the new in-line four-cylinder unit has become more economical by 6,9% with a very slight increase in power by 4 hp.

Also, for more effective damping of vibrations, 8 balancers are located on its steel crankshaft, as is done in the turbocharged version of the V3 - VDT. The piston diameter has been increased to 89 mm and the stroke to 3,94 inches, which has reduced the number of revolutions and, as a result, fuel consumption.

Reliability

Through the use of heat-resistant materials based on steel and molybdenum, the cylinder block of this engine has improved protection against overheating, which reduces oil consumption and extends engine life.

According to the manufacturer, the operating time of the motor before overhaul is 250 thousand kilometers, although in practice, with timely maintenance, it is quite capable of overcoming the mark of 300 thousand.

As for self-repair, one should take into account the fact that a very limited amount of information is freely available and in most cases it will be much more expedient to purchase a contract unit with mileage in the countries of America or Europe, the price of which will be around 60 thousand rubles.Internal combustion engine Mazda L5-VE

Intake and exhaust systems

The intake manifold of this internal combustion engine is made using a technology that allows you to change its length depending on the engine speed.

So, at low rpm values, the size of the collector increases, and at high rpm, on the contrary, it decreases.

This allows you to achieve maximum power at high speeds and ensure the best air filling of the combustion chamber in any mode of engine operation.

For better functioning of the catalytic converter, the efficiency of which depends on the rate of its heating, the exhaust manifold was made of steel and placed in a heat-insulating material.

It should also be noted that the technology of "nanoparticles" was used for the first time in Mazda 3 and CX-7 cars to neutralize harmful emissions, which made it possible to significantly reduce the use of precious metals and, as a result, reduce the cost of its production.
