Volkswagen concern engineers have proposed a new power unit, which is included in the EA111-1,4 engine line, including AEX, AXP, BBY, BCA, BUD and CGGB.

Description

The production of the Volkswagen APE engine has been established at the plant of the VAG concern since October 1999.

APE is a 1,4-liter gasoline in-line four-cylinder aspirated engine with a capacity of 75 hp. with and a torque of 126 Nm.

The cylinder block is cast from aluminum alloy.

Aluminum pistons, lightweight. They have three rings, two upper compression, lower oil scraper. Piston pins of a floating type, from longitudinal displacement, are fixed with retaining rings.

The crankshaft is mounted on five bearings, made integral with the cylinder block. It has a design feature - it cannot be removed, since loosening the caps of the main bearings leads to deformation of the block. Therefore, when the crankshaft or its main bearings are worn, the cylinder block assembly with the shaft is replaced.

The cylinder head is aluminum, with two camshafts located in a separate support and 16 valves equipped with hydraulic compensators.

The intake camshaft (inlet) is driven by the main (large) belt from the crankshaft sprocket, the exhaust camshaft is driven by the auxiliary (small) belt from the intake.

Car owners note a low service life of timing belts, especially a short one. As a rule, it does not withstand more than 30 thousand kilometers. The manufacturer recommends replacing the belts every 90 thousand km, and then carefully inspect them after passing 30 thousand km.
