The engine builders of the VAG auto concern have opened a new line of EA111-TSI engines.

Description

Production of the CBZA engine began in 2010 and continued for five years, until 2015. The assembly was carried out at the Volkswagen concern plant in Mlada Boleslav (Czech Republic).

Structurally, the unit was created on the basis of the ICE 1,4 TSI EA111. Thanks to the use of innovative technical solutions, it was possible to design and put into production a qualitatively new motor, which has become lighter, more economical and more dynamic than its prototype.

The CBZA is a 1,2-liter, four-cylinder in-line gasoline engine with a capacity of 86 hp. with and torque of 160 Nm turbocharged.

Installed on cars:

  • Audi A1 8X (2010-2014);
  • Seat Toledo 4 (2012-2015);
  • Volkswagen Caddy III /2K/ (2010-2015);

  • Roomster I (2010-2015).

In addition to the listed CBZA, you can find VW Jetta and Polo under the hood.

The cylinder block, unlike its predecessor, has become aluminum. Sleeves are made of gray cast iron, "wet" type. The possibility of their replacement during a major overhaul is not provided by the manufacturer.

The pistons are made according to the traditional scheme - with three rings. The top two are compression, the bottom oil scraper. The peculiarity lies in the reduced coefficient of friction.

Steel crankshaft with reduced diameters of main and connecting rod journals (up to 42 mm).

The cylinder head is aluminum, with one camshaft and eight valves (two per cylinder). Adjustment of the thermal gap is carried out by hydraulic compensators.

Timing chain drive. Requires special control over the state of the circuit. Its jump usually ends with a bend in the valves. The chain resource of the first models barely reached 30 thousand km of car run.

Turbocharger IHI 1634 (Japan). Creates an overpressure of 0,6 bar.

The ignition coil is one, common for four candles. Controls the motor of the Siemens Simos 10 ECU.

Direct injection fuel injection system. For Europe, it is recommended to use RON-95 gasoline, in Russia AI-95 is allowed, but the engine runs most stably on AI-98, which is recommended by the manufacturer.

Structurally, the motor is not difficult, therefore it is considered quite reliable.

Reliability

If the first batches of the engine did not differ in particular reliability, then starting from 2012 the situation has changed radically. The improvements carried out significantly increased the reliability of the motor.

In their reviews, car owners emphasize this factor. So, colon on one of the forums writes the following: “... I have a friend in a taxi who works on a VW caddy with a 1,2 tsi engine, the car does not turn off. Replacing the chain at 40 thousand km and that's it, now the mileage is 179000 and no problems. His other colleagues also have at least 150000 runs, and who had a chain replacement, who does not. No one had burnout pistons!».

Both motorists and the manufacturer emphasize that the reliability and durability of the engine directly depends on its timely and high-quality service, the use of high-quality fuels and lubricants during operation.

Weak spots

The weaknesses of the internal combustion engine include the low resource of the timing chain, spark plugs and explosive wires, injection pump and turbine electric drive.

After 2011, the chain stretch problem was solved. Its resource has become about 90 thousand km.

Spark plugs sometimes misfire. The reason is high boost pressure. Because of this, the negative electrode of the spark plug burns.

High voltage wires are prone to oxidation.

The turbine electric drive is not reliable enough. Repair is possible.

The failure of the injection pump is accompanied by the ingress of gasoline into the crankcase of the internal combustion engine. A malfunction can lead to failure of the entire engine.

In addition, car owners note the duration of the internal combustion engine warming up at low temperatures, vibration at idle speeds and increased demands on the quality of gasoline and oil.

Maintainability

Repair of CBZA does not cause great difficulties. The necessary spare parts are always in stock. Prices are not cheap, but not outrageous either.

The only problem is the cylinder block. Aluminum blocks are considered disposable and cannot be repaired.

The rest of the engine is easy to change. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the need to purchase a variety of special tools and devices.

Before undertaking the restoration of the motor, it will not be superfluous to consider the option of acquiring a contract engine. According to car owners, the price of a full overhaul sometimes exceeds the cost of a contract motor.

In general, the CBZA engine is considered reliable, economical and durable when properly cared for.
