Description of the motor device SVAV 2.0 TDI

In 2007, Volkswagen introduced a new family of Common Rail diesel engines EA189, one of the representatives of which is a 2.0-liter power unit under the symbol CBAB. The design here is a cast iron block, an aluminum 16-valve cylinder head with hydraulic compensators, a timing belt, a fuel system with a Bosch CP4 single-piston pump and piezo injectors. The boost is provided by a KKK BV43 turbocharger with a variable geometry vacuum drive.

Engine number CBAB is located in front at the junction with the box

In addition, this diesel engine is equipped with an intake manifold with swirl flaps, an electrically actuated EGR valve and a balancer block combined with an oil pump.

Reviews on the SVAV engine, its pros and cons

Advantages:

  • With proper care, a huge resource
  • Modest consumption for such power
  • No problems with service and spare parts
  • And hydraulic lifters are provided

Disadvantages:

  • Oil pump hex problem
  • Turbine geometry often fails
  • Piezo injectors are afraid of bad diesel fuel
  • Bends the valve with a broken timing belt

Disadvantages, breakdowns and problems of the CBAB engine

Oil pump hexagon

This power unit is equipped with a block of balancers, combined with an oil pump, which is driven by a hex key that is too short. It turns off up to 150 km, which turns off the oil pump and lowers the lubrication pressure in the system. In November 000, the length of the ill-fated hexagon was increased and this problem was gone.

Fuel system

The Bosch CP4 fuel system is considered very reliable, but it also has weaknesses: if not properly maintained, the fuel pump pusher roller turns across the cam and the pump starts to drive chips. Also, the fuel pressure regulator regularly wedges here, and the use of low-quality diesel fuel immediately affects the resource of the piezo injectors.

Turbocharger

Ironically, the KKK BV43 turbine, also known as BorgWarner, is not a problem, it is let down by a vacuum actuator for changing the geometry, in which the membrane cracks. Sometimes the turbine control valve itself fails or its vacuum tube bursts.

Other disadvantages

As in any modern diesel engine, contamination of the USR valve and intake manifold swirl flaps, which also have a not very reliable mechanism, cause a lot of trouble. You also have to regularly update the oil separator membrane in the valve cover.

The manufacturer declared the resource of the CBAB engine at 200 km, but it also serves up to 000 km.
