Alfa Romeo Twin Spark engines
Content
The Alfa Romeo Twin Spark 4-cylinder gasoline engines were produced from 1986 to 2011 and were installed on almost all Alfa models from the small 145 to the executive 166. Based on the TS series units, the first modifications of the JTS‑engine family of engines were created.

First generation Alfa Romeo Twin Spark engines
In 1986, the 75-liter engine of the new Twin Spark line debuted on the Alfa Romeo 2.0. It was a very progressive unit for that time with multiport fuel injection, an aluminum cylinder block with so-called wet liners, a timing chain drive and an aluminum head with a pair of camshafts that controlled only eight valves. Soon the series expanded due to units smaller in working volume by 1.7 and 1.8 liters.
The main highlight of such units was the ignition system with two candles per cylinder, which made it possible not only to seriously improve the completeness of combustion of the fuel-air mixture, but also made it possible to operate the engine in economical mode but in very poor mixtures. In the first generation of the motor, two identical and symmetrically located candles were used.
The line consisted of power units with a volume of 1.7, 1.8 and two types of 2.0-liter engines:
AR67105 ( 115 hp / 146 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 155 |
AR67101 ( 129 hp / 165 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 155 |
AR06420 ( 148 hp / 186 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 164 |
AR06224 ( 148 hp / 186 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 75 |
AR64103 ( 143 hp / 187 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 164 |
AR67201 ( 143 hp / 187 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 155 |
Second generation Alfa Romeo Twin Spark engines
In 1996, the second generation of Twin Spark engines debuted on the Alfa Romeo 155. Their design differed significantly: there is a cast-iron cylinder block, a timing belt drive, an aluminum head for 16 valves and an inlet dephaser (in all versions except ECO). Modifications with a volume of 1.8 and 2.0 liters were equipped with a VLIM intake geometry change system, and only the younger engines of 1.4 and 1.6 liters did without it, they had a conventional manifold.
The Twin Spark system has also changed slightly, two identical symmetrically located candles have given way to a pair of large and small candles, the main of which was located in the center. When switching to Euro 3, the ignition system was updated and individual coils appeared.
The second line consisted of four types of power units with a volume of 1.4, 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 liters:
AR38501 ( 103 hp / 124 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 145, 146 |
AR67601 ( 120 hp / 146 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 145, 146, 155 |
AR32104 ( 120 hp / 146 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 147, 156 |
AR37203 ( 105 hp / 140 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 147 ECHO |
AR67106 ( 140 hp / 165 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 145, 146, 155 |
AR32201 ( 144 hp / 169 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 145, 146, 156 |
AR32205 ( 140 hp / 163 Nm ) | Alfa Romeo 145, 156, GT II |
