Hyundai i40 engines
Content
Hyundai i40 is a large passenger car designed for long trips. The vehicle is produced by the South Korean famous concern Hyundai. Basically, it is intended for use by the European market.
History of the car
Hyundai i40 is considered a full-size class D sedan, developed, as noted earlier, by the South Korean company of the same name. This model is assembled in South Korea, at an automobile plant, which is located in the city of Ulsan.
Three types of engines are used inside the car, two of which run on gasoline fuel, and one on diesel. In Russia, a model equipped only with a gasoline engine is sold.
The car first appeared at one of the famous exhibitions in 2011. The exhibition was held in Geneva, and immediately this model gained immense popularity among motorists. It is worth noting that sales of the model began in the same year.
The development of the vehicle was carried out by German specialists who worked in the European technology center of the concern. As for the produced car models in Europe, two body options were available to customers at once - a sedan and a station wagon. In Russia, you can only buy a sedan.
The author of the design concept of the model was the chief designer of the technology center, Thomas Burkle. He did a great job on the exterior of the i40 and presented a project designed for a younger consumer. This explains the sporty appearance of the model.
It can be noted that in the model range of Hyundai cars, a new car stood between the Elantra and Sonata cars. Many assume that it was the Sonata that became the prototype for the creation of the Hyundai i40.

The main technical feature of the new model was a well-developed security system. The basic equipment of the vehicle includes up to 7 airbags, one of which is located next to the driver's knees. Also, in addition to pillows, the car is equipped with a steering column, the design of which is deformed in a collision so that the driver is not injured.
What engines are installed?
As already noted, three types of engines were used in the car. However, each of them equipped different generations of the famous sedan and station wagon. The main types of engines used in the vehicle are presented in the table.
Engine | Year of construction | Volume, l | Power, hp |
D4FD | 2015-2017 | 1.7 | 141 |
G4NC | 2.0 | 157 | |
G4FD | 1.6 | 135 | |
G4NC | 2.0 | 150 | |
G4FD | 2011-2015 | 1.6 | 135 |
G4NC | 2.0 | 150 | |
D4FD | 1.7 | 136 |
Thus, we can conclude that almost the same engine models were used in the produced generations.
What engines are the most common?
All three types of engines used in this car model are considered popular and in demand, so it is worth considering each in more detail.
D4FD
First of all, it should be mentioned that until 1989, Hyundai produced engines, the design of which was similar to the engines of the Mitsubishi concern, and only over time significant changes occurred in Hyundai units.
So, for example, one of the newly introduced engines was the D4FD. Among the features of this power unit should be noted:
- Use of four cylinders.
- Diesel fuel.
- The presence of turbines equipped with 16 valves.
- The volume is 1,6 liters.
The engine is considered one of the most reliable in its family, so many motorists prefer to choose cars equipped with it.
G4NC
The next in line is the G4NC motor, produced since 1999. The manufacturer of this motor guarantees trouble-free operation for more than 100 thousand km. The features should include:
- The presence of two camshafts. They are on top of the cylinder head. The first shaft is responsible for the operation of the intake valves, the second controls the operation of the exhaust valves.
- Fixing the motor on several pillows of a certain flexibility. At the same time, half of the engine mounts are mounted on the gearbox, and the remaining pillows are fixed on the motor.
- The use of five bearings on the crankshaft, which indicates the strength of the structure. It is also worth noting that the crankshaft is made of cast iron.
- No need for valve adjustment. Hydraulic compensators are responsible for this, so the process can be called automated.
- Possibility of holding up to 3,3 liters of oil.
- Engine power 101 hp
However, despite the existing features, this engine does not meet the assurances of the manufacturers, and breakdowns or wear of elements occur after 50-60 thousand km. This can be avoided only in the case of a thorough and regular technical inspection of the car and its components, as well as timely repairs.
G4FD
Another ICE used in this model is the G4FD. The main features of the unit are:
- Using GDI Direct Injection.
- The performance of the BC and cylinder head from winged metal is a fairly durable material.
- The presence of an intake manifold made of plastic.
- Camshaft equipment with 16 valves.
- No noise during chain operation.
- The presence of hydraulic compensators and fozregulatory.
At the same time, it is worth noting that the plastic manifold is also a small drawback of the engine, since plastic as a material is not the most suitable option. Especially if the element is exposed to high temperatures.
Which engine is the best?
Each of the engines used in the model can be called good and of sufficient quality. However, the D4FD power unit, which is also equipped with the latest generation models, has proven itself better than the rest.
Therefore, when choosing a vehicle, you should pay attention to which engine this or that car is equipped with.

As a result, it should be said that the Hyundai i40 is suitable for family trips as well as possible. Large dimensions provide roomy space inside the vehicle, as well as a comfortable ride on the roads both in the city and beyond.
