Kia Sorento engines
Content
At the time of its introduction, Kia Sorento was the largest car in the brand's lineup. Only in 2008 this title was transferred to Mohave.
Kia Sorento quickly gained popularity due to its attractive price / quality ratio, good equipment and honest all-wheel drive.
Generation I Sorento engines
The first generation of Kia Sorento saw the light in 2002. The SUV has a frame structure, it was abandoned in the next body. There are two types of all-wheel drive. The first is a classic part-time with a hard-wired front end.
The second is the automatic TOD system, which recognizes when it is necessary to transfer torque to the front wheels. For the Sorento, three types of powertrains were offered: a gasoline “four”, a turbodiesel and a flagship V6.
G4JS
The design of the Japanese 4G4 from Mitsubishi was taken as the basis for the G64JS motor. The Koreans chose the most technological modification of this engine with a 16-valve block head with a double camshaft. The block itself is cast iron.
The timing system uses a belt. When broken, the valves meet the pistons and bend. The engine is equipped with hydraulic compensators, which independently regulate the thermal clearances of the valves. There are two coils in the ignition system, each gives a spark to two cylinders.
The G4JS engine is quite reliable and resourceful. He easily walks 300 thousand km. It is also possible to overhaul by boring cylinders.

G6CU
The 3,5-liter six-cylinder V-engine belongs to the Sigma series. It is a copy of the Mitsubishi engine that was installed on the Pajero. The block is made of cast iron, its heads are aluminum with a DOHC double camshaft system and four valves per cylinder. There are hydraulic lifters that relieve manual valve adjustment. The intake manifold is aluminum with a system of distributed injection.
The reliability of this engine is questionable. Some of them did not live up to 100 thousand km. A common malfunction is wear on the crankshaft liners. It can be identified by the knock of the engine during a cold start. If the damage is strong, then it will not disappear even after warming up.
Many parts are interchangeable with the Mitsubishi 6G74 engine, such as crankshaft, liners, piston rings, etc. They are of a higher quality, so it is better to use them if you are planning a major overhaul.

G6DB
After restyling in 2006, the G6DB replaced the G6CU engine. In addition to the reduced volume to 3,3 liters, there are many other differences. The block is aluminum. The timing mechanism now uses a chain. The hydraulic lifters were removed, the valves require manual adjustment. But there were phase shifters on the intake shafts.
The compression ratio was slightly increased, and the engine requires 95th gasoline. Ultimately, power increased by more than 50 horsepower. The Koreans managed to raise the level of reliability. There are no special complaints about the 3,3 engine. Breakdowns are mainly associated with natural wear closer to 300 km.

D4CB
The turbodiesel four-cylinder Sorento unit carries the D4CB index. The engine block is cast iron, the head is aluminum with two camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder. Timing drive of three chains. The first versions of the engine were equipped with a conventional turbine, then the manufacturer switched to a variable geometry turbocharger, which gave an increase of 30 horsepower. On cars before restyling, the Bosch fuel system was used, after 2006 - Delphi.
The diesel engine is quite capricious. Fuel equipment is demanding on the quality of diesel fuel. Under wear, chips form in the high-pressure fuel pump, which enters the nozzles. Copper washers under the nozzles burn out, candles stick.

Sorento II generation engines
A fairly updated Sorento was introduced in 2009. Now the car has become more road-friendly, having changed the frame to a load-bearing body. Increasing its rigidity and the use of high-quality metal made it possible to achieve the maximum 5 stars in the EuroNCAP safety rating. Sorento for Russia is assembled at a plant in Kaliningrad. The crossover is popular, in connection with this, its production continues to this day.
G4KE
The result of a program to unite automakers to create a common engine was the G4KE unit. It is a complete copy of the Japanese 4B12 from Mitsubishi. The same motor is installed by the French on crossovers Citroen C-crosser, Peugeot 4007.
The G4KE engine belongs to the Theta II series and is a version of the G4KD with a volume increased to 2,4 liters. To do this, the designers installed another crankshaft, thanks to which the piston stroke increased from 86 to 97 mm. The cylinder diameter has also grown: 88 mm versus 86. The block and cylinder head are aluminum. The motor is equipped with two camshafts with CVVT phase shifters on each. Hydraulic compensators are not provided, valves need to be manually adjusted. The timing chain is maintenance-free and designed for the entire life of the engine.
The main problems of the unit are exactly the same as the two-liter G4KD. On cold start, the engine is very noisy. Sounds like an old diesel. When the motor reaches operating temperature, it disappears. In the range of 1000-1200 rpm, strong vibrations occur. The problem is the candles. Chattering noise is another common complaint. It is created by fuel injectors. It's just a feature of their work.

D4HB
A new series of diesel units Hyundai R was introduced in 2009. It includes two motors: a volume of 2 and 2,2 liters. The last one is installed on the Kia Sorento. This is a four-cylinder in-line engine with a cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head. There are 4 valves per cylinder. The third-generation Bosch fuel system with piezoelectric injectors operates at a pressure of 1800 bar. Supercharging is carried out by an e-VGT variable geometry turbine.
To reduce vibration, the designers introduced a balance shaft. Hydraulic lifters automatically adjust valve clearances. Diesel meets Euro-5 standards. To do this, a diesel particulate filter and a highly efficient EGR are installed in the exhaust system.
The manufacturer claims that the resource of the unit is 250 km. Like any other engine, the D000HB has weaknesses. With dynamic driving, the engine tends to consume oil up to 4 ml per 500 km. Modern fuel equipment is very demanding on fuel quality. Repairs are carried out only in specialized services and the prices for spare parts are quite high. Therefore, it is advisable to refuel only at proven gas stations. From poor-quality oil or a rare replacement, the timing chain tensioner fails, after which it starts knocking.

XNUMXrd generation Sorento engines
The third generation Kia Sorento was introduced in 2015. The new car received a completely different design that meets modern corporate standards of the brand. Only in Russia the crossover is called Sorento Prime. This is due to the fact that Kia decided to sell the new model at the same time as the second generation Sorento.
The new crossover borrowed power plants from its predecessor. The range of petrol engines includes a 4-liter four-cylinder aspirated G2,4KE and a 3,3-liter V-shaped six-cylinder unit. There is only one diesel engine. This is the already well-known 2,2-liter D4HB from the R series. The only new engine was added after restyling. They became the six-cylinder G6DC.
G6DC
Modern Hyundai-Kia V6 engines belong to the Lambda II line. Representatives of this series, which include the G6DC, have an aluminum block and cylinder head. The motor is equipped with separate intake-exhaust camshafts and four cylinder valves (DOHC). The Dual-CVVT system with phase shifters on each shaft is applied. There is a chain in the timing drive, there are no hydraulic lifters. It is necessary to manually adjust the valve clearances every 90 thousand km.
The G6DC engine debuted on the Kia Sorento in 2011. Compared to its predecessor, the G6DB, the new motor has a slightly longer piston stroke. Thanks to this, the engine capacity increased to 3,5 liters. Its power on different wounds ranges from 276 to 286 horses. For Russia, the return was artificially reduced to 249 forces in order to reduce the tax coefficient.
Some G6DC engines suffer from piston ring sticking. Because of this, oil enters the combustion chamber, resulting in carbon deposits. It is necessary to monitor the level of lubrication. If it gets too low, there is a chance to turn the crankshaft liners.

Kia Sorento engines cannot be called "millionaires". Each unit has its weak points. On average, their resource without repair is 150-300 thousand km. In order for the engine to roll back its service life without problems, change the oil more often and refuel only at large chain gas stations. On machines with diesel engines, fine and coarse filters should be updated every 10-30 thousand km. This will reduce the risk of malfunctions with the fuel system.
