The basis for this car was the same platform on which Kia Sephia was previously produced. The difference was only in size, the Spectra turned out to be a little larger, which had a positive effect on passenger comfort.

The production of the model was organized almost all over the world, each region offered its own modifications. In Russia, production was launched at the Izhevsk Automobile Plant. Five versions of the car were produced for the Russian market.

But, they all had one engine in the base. All the difference was in the layout. Also, thanks to the engine settings and transmission features, each modification has differences in dynamics.

First of all, all drivers are interested in fuel consumption, modifications with a manual gearbox are more economical.

Engine overview

The cylinder block is cast entirely from high quality cast iron. The block includes:

  • cylinders;
  • lubrication channels;
  • cooling jacket.

The numbering of the cylinders is made from the crankshaft pulley. Also, various elements are cast on the block, which are fastening mechanisms. An oil pan is attached to the lower part, and the cylinder head is attached to the upper platform. Even at the bottom of the block, five supports are cast for mounting the main bearings of the crankshaft.

It is especially worth noting that the ignition does not require adjustment, nor does it need to be serviced.

Service Features

Like any piece of machinery, the S6D engine should be serviced regularly. This will minimize the risk of malfunctions. According to the official regulations, the following maintenance is required:

  • oil and filter change - every 15 thousand km;
  • air filter - every 30 thousand km .;
  • timing belt - 45 thousand km;
  • spark plugs - 45 thousand km.

If the work is done within the specified time, no problems should arise.

It should be borne in mind that the motor is quite demanding on oil. According to the manufacturer's recommendations, only lubricants with the following characteristics can be used:

  • 10w-30;
  • 5w-30.

Common malfunctions

Despite the fairly high reliability, S6D motors can still break down. There could be plenty of reasons for this. We list only the most common options.

  • The engine is not gaining proper power. The first thing to check is the air filter. In many cases, it gets dirty much faster than the manufacturer suggests. Also often the cause of this behavior is a problem with the throttle.
  • A whitish foam appears in the oil. Coolant has entered the crankcase, identify and eliminate the cause. The lubricant must be replaced.
  • Low pressure in the lubrication system. Check the oil level, low pressure is often a symptom of low oil. Also, such a symptom may occur when the filter or conductive channels are dirty.
  • Valve knock. Most often, this is a sign of wear on the working surfaces of the valves. But, sometimes the reason is hydraulic pushers. Such noise requires careful diagnosis.
  • Engine vibration. It is necessary to replace the pillows on which the motor is mounted. They are made of rubber, it does not respond well to negative temperatures, so the life of the pillows usually does not exceed 2 years.

What modifications are more common

As with the production of any budget car, the main emphasis here was on inexpensive modifications. Therefore, the most produced versions were 1.6 MT Standard. They are the simplest and cheapest. But, they are not the most popular among drivers.

The main disadvantage of the 1.6 MT Standard modification is the almost complete absence of additional equipment that drivers are used to.

There is no air conditioning, and there are only two frontal airbags. Also power windows only at the front. But, there are a large number of niches where it is convenient to store small things.Kia Spectra engines

The rarest are modifications intended for Europe. They have other engines and were not officially sold on the territory of the Russian Federation. Usually imported as used cars. Despite the excellent dynamics, it has a number of shortcomings. The main one is the shortage of components for engine repair, since such modifications are not implemented here, the parts are also not supplied, they have to be ordered from abroad.

What modifications are preferable

It is almost impossible to answer the question which of the modifications is better. The fact is that there are a number of individual characteristics that are important to a particular person. What is required by one, is absolutely not needed by another.

If you like dynamics and comfort, then the 1.6 MT Comfort or 1.6 MT Comfort+ is a good choice. They show themselves perfectly on the road, and also have a very comfortable interior. Soft plastic and high-quality leatherette make the car not inferior in terms of comfort to C-class cars from the 90s. Also, it is these modifications that are the most reliable.

For people who prefer automatic transmissions, there are two options with a similar box. 1.6 AT The standard practically does not differ from its analogue with mechanics, the only difference is in the transmission. If you want a comfortable car, then the 1.6 AT Lux is the most expensive and packaged option in the lineup. But, when choosing an automatic transmission, it is worth remembering that the engine is not powerful enough here, so cars with automatic transmission will lose in dynamics.
