Mitsubishi Colt engines

Mitsubishi Colt is a landmark model for the Japanese company. Along with the Lancer, it was the Colt that was Mitsubishi's locomotive for several decades.

Produced since the distant 1962, the model managed to acquire as many as six generations. And millions of copies of this car have been sold around the world. The latest, sixth generation, was produced from 2002 to 2012. In 2012, due to the crisis in the company, the release of the model was suspended and has not been resumed so far. It remains to be hoped that after Mitsubishi copes with its problems, the release of the Colts will resume. But let's take a closer look at the history of the sixth generation Mitsubishi Colt.Mitsubishi Colt engines

History of the sixth generation Mitsubishi Colt

For the first time, the sixth generation of Colt saw the light in 2002 in Japan. The author of the appearance of the car was the famous, today, designer Olivier Boulet (now he is the chief designer of Mercedes). Sales in Europe of the new Colt began a little later, in 2004.

As expected, for such global models, they were equipped with the widest range of power units, which consisted of as many as 6 engines, with a volume of 1,1 to 1,6 liters. And five of them are gasoline and only one diesel.

In 2008, this generation experienced its last restyling. After him, outwardly, the front of the Colt became very similar to the Mitsubishi Lancer produced at that time, which was incredibly popular and largely due to its striking design.

As for the engines, and technology in general, it, as usual, did not undergo any special changes during restyling. True, there was one new power unit. The 1,5-liter turbocharged engine was boosted to 163 hp.

  • Petrol, 1,3 liters;
  • Petrol, 1,5 liters;
  • Petrol, 1,5 liter, turbocharged;
  • Petrol, 1,6 liters;

Next, consider each of these motors in more detail.

Mitsubishi 3A91 engine

These power units represent a large family of three-cylinder 3A9 engines. These power units were developed jointly with the German concern Mercedes, then Daimler-Chrysler. Their release was to begin in 2003.

These engines were created by removing one cylinder from the four-cylinder engines of the 4A9 family. In total, the family consisted of 3 motors, but, specifically, only one of them was installed on the Colt.

Mitsubishi 4A90 engine

And this power unit is a representative of the large 4A9 family, which was mentioned above. The engine was developed jointly with DaimlerChrysler and first appeared on the Mitsubishi Colt in 2004.

All engines developed within this family have an aluminum cylinder block and head. They have four valves per cylinder and two camshafts located at the top of the block head.

Specifically, these power units are produced to this day and, in addition to Colt, they were installed on the following cars:

  • Smart Forfour from 2004 to 2006;
  • Haima 2 (Chinese-made machine) engine installed since 2011;
  • BAIC Up (the same car comes from China) - since 2014;
  • DFM Joyear x3 (small Chinese crossover) - since 2016;
  • Zotye Z200 (this is none other than the Fiat Siena produced in China).

Mitsubishi 4A91 engine

This is almost the same power unit as the previous one, only with a larger working volume. However, unlike the previous engine, it was much more in demand on various cars. In addition to those models on which the 1,3-liter engine was installed, it was also installed on a whole scattering of Chinese cars on which these engines are installed to this day:

  • Brilliance FSV since 2010;
  • Brilliance V5 since 2016;
  • Soueast V3 since 2014;
  • Senova D50 since 2014;
  • Yema T70 SUV with 2016;
  • Soueast DX3 since 2017;
  • Mitsubishi Xpander (this is a seven-seater minivan of a Japanese company that is produced in Indonesia);
  • Zotye SR7;
  • Zotye Z300;
  • ario s300;
  • BAIC BJ20.

Двигатель Mitsubishi 4G15T

The only turbocharged gasoline engine among all that were installed on the sixth generation Mitsubishi Colt. In addition, this is the oldest power unit, on a Japanese hatchback, it saw the light back in 1989 and was installed on Colts and Lancers of the third, fourth and fifth generations. In addition to them, these power units can be found on, just the same, a huge number of Chinese cars, on which they are still installed in series.

Among other things, these engines were distinguished by their phenomenal reliability. A copy of the motor was registered, which passed 1 km without major repairs on a 604 Mitsubishi Mirage sedan (that was the name of the Lancer in the Japanese market).

In addition, these engines responded very well to forcing. For example, the rally Mitsubishi Colt CZT Ralliart has a 4G15T that develops 197 horsepower.

Mitsubishi 4G18 engine

This engine, like the previous one, belongs to a large series of 4G1 power units. This series was introduced back in the late 70s of the last century and turned out to be so successful that, with some changes, it is still being produced today.

The main feature of this particular engine was the presence of two ignition coils, one for every two cylinders.

This motor, like the previous one, was also distinguished by brutal reliability, which led to its crazy popularity with third-party manufacturers, primarily Chinese ones, and was installed on a really huge number of different cars. In particular,:

  • Mitsubishi Kuda;
  • Mitsubishi Lancer;
  • Mitsubishi Space Star;
  • Foton Midi from 2010 to 2011;
  • Hafei Saima;
  • Proton Waja;
  • Zotye 2008 / Nomad / Hunter / T200, installed from 2007 to 2009;
  • BYD F3;
  • Hafei Saibao;
  • Foton Noon;
  • MPM Motors PS160;
  • Geely Borui;
  • Geely Boyue;
  • Geely Yuanjing SUV;
  • Emgrand GL;
  • Brilliance BS2;
  • Brilliance BS4;
  • Landwind X6;
  • Zotye T600;
  • Zotye T700;
  • Mitsubishi Lancer (China)
  • Soueast Lioncel
  • Haima Haifuxing

Mitsubishi OM639 engine

This is the only diesel power unit of those that were installed on the Japanese hatchback. It was developed jointly with the German concern Mercedes-Benz and, in addition to Japanese cars, was also installed on German cars. Or rather, for one car - Smart Forfour 1.5l CDI.

The main feature of this engine is the exhaust gas recirculation system, which made it possible to achieve the Euro 4 emission standard.

Actually, this is all I wanted to tell about the Mitsubishi Colt engines of the extreme sixth generation.
