Engines Mitsubishi Pajero iO

This car is known in our country more under the name Mitsubishi Pajero Pinin. It was under this name that this car was sold in Europe. At the beginning, a little history of this SUV.

It seems to many people that the first full-fledged crossover of the Japanese company was the Mitsubishi Outlander. But not many people know that there was still an intermediate option, so to speak.

In the 20th century, Mitsubishi was one of the few full-fledged SUV manufacturers in the world. It seems that there are no people who have not heard about the famous Mitsubishi Pajero jeep.

When crossovers began to gain popularity, the Japanese built an experimental car, which, like crossovers, had a load-bearing body, but at the same time all the off-road systems that were on the older Pajero were installed on it.

Pajero Pinin, of course, did not have any front-wheel drive version, which are so popular today on crossovers.Engines Mitsubishi Pajero iO

The production of the car was started in 1998 and continued until 2007. The appearance for the car was developed by the Italian design studio Pininfarina, hence the prefix in the name of the SUV. By the way, for Europe, a small Pajero was produced in Italy, at a factory owned by Italians.

The car did not show record sales runs, a fairly solid price affected, which, in turn, was formed due to the large number of off-road systems, without which modern crossovers successfully manage. And in 2007, the production of the car was discontinued without creating the next generation. At that time, the Outlander mentioned above had already successfully occupied the niche of crossovers from Mitsubishi Corporation at that time.

True, in some countries the car is still being produced and successfully sold. For example, in China, Changfeng Feiteng is still on the conveyor.

Moreover, the Chinese are already producing the second generation of the car. By the way, it is produced only for the Chinese market and, apparently, by agreement with the Japanese, it is not exported.

But China is a completely different story, and we will return to our sheep, or rather to our Pajero Io and its power units.

Over the years of production, three engines and all gasoline engines were installed on it:

  • 1,6 liter engine. Factory index Mitsubishi 4G18;
  • 1,8 liter engine. Factory index Mitsubishi 4G93;
  • 2 liter engine. Factory index Mitsubishi 4G94.

Let's consider each of them in more detail:

Mitsubishi 4G18 engine

This motor is a representative of a large family of Mitsbishi Orion engines. Moreover, this is the largest power unit of the family. It is built on the basis of 4G13 / 4G15 engines, with a volume of 1,3 and 1,5 liters, respectively.

The 4G18 used a cylinder head from these engines, but at the same time the volume was increased by increasing the piston stroke from 82 to 87,5 mm and slightly increasing the cylinder diameter, up to 76 mm.

As for the cylinder head, it is 16-valve on these engines. And the valves themselves are equipped with hydraulic compensators and do not need to be adjusted.

Engines Mitsubishi Pajero iODespite the fact that the engine was made according to the standards of the 90s, when they made almost perpetual motors, it did not suffer from excessive reliability and had one very unpleasant childhood illness.

Somewhere after 100 km, the engine began to actively consume oil and smoke. This is due to the fact that after such a rather modest run, piston rings lay on these engines.

And this, in turn, was due to errors in the design of the engine cooling system. So buying used Mitsubishi Pajero iO with these engines is highly discouraged.

Other technical characteristics of these power units:

Engine volume, cm³1584
Type of fuelGasoline AI-92, AI-95
Number of cylinders4
Horsepower at rpmTBU
Torque, N * m at rpm.134/4500
Cylinder diameter, mm76
The piston stroke, mm87.5
Compression ratio9.5:1

Mitsubishi 4G93 engine

Two other power units from those that can be found under the hood of Pajero Pinin belong to the large family of 4G9 engines. This engine family, and this engine in particular, is distinguished by its 16-valve cylinder head and overhead camshafts.

Engines Mitsubishi Pajero iOSpecifically, this power unit became famous for being one of the first engines equipped with a GDI direct fuel injection system.

These engines turned out to be so popular that more than a million of them were produced and, in addition to Pajero iO, they were installed on the following models:

  • Mitsubishi Charisma;
  • Mitsubishi Colt (Mirage);
  • Mitsubishi Galant;
  • Mitsubishi Lancer;
  • Mitsubishi RVR/Space Runner;
  • Mitsubishi Dingo;
  • Mitsubishi Emeraude;
  • Mitsubishi Eterna;
  • Mitsubishi FTO;
  • Mitsubishi GTO;
  • Free Mitsubishi;
  • Mitsubishi Space Star;
  • Mitsubishi Space Wagon.

Technical characteristics of motors:

Engine volume, cm³1834
Type of fuelGasoline AI-92, AI-95
Number of cylinders4
Horsepower at rpmTBU
Torque, N * m at rpm.TBU
Cylinder diameter, mm81
The piston stroke, mm89
Compression ratio8.5-12: 1

By the way, there are versions of this engine equipped with a turbocharger, but they were not installed on the Pajero Pinin.

Mitsubishi 4G94 engine

Well, the last engine of those that were installed on a small Mitsubishi SUV is also a representative of the 4G9 family. Moreover, this is the largest representative of this family.

It was obtained by increasing the volume of the previous 4G93 engine. The volume was increased by installing a long-stroke crankshaft, after which the piston stroke increased from 89 to 95.8 mm. The diameter of the cylinders also increased slightly, however, by only 0,5 mm and it became 81,5 mm.Engines Mitsubishi Pajero iO

The valves of this power unit, like the entire family, are equipped with hydraulic compensators and do not need to be adjusted. Timing belt drive. The belt is replaced every 90 km.

Technical characteristics of the 4G94 engine:

Engine volume, cm³1999
Type of fuelGasoline AI-92, AI-95
Number of cylinders4
Horsepower at rpm125/5200
145/5700
Torque, N * m at rpm.176/4250
191/3750
Cylinder diameter, mm81.5
The piston stroke, mm95.8
Compression ratio9.5-11: 1

Actually, this is all the information on Mitsubishi Pajero iO engines, which is worth introducing to the respected public.
