The Y20DTH and Y20DTL engines are Opel diesel engines, which are represented by several generations, and were used until 2009. Reliable units, but they lack dynamics, since they were developed back in the 90s, and over time they were only slightly modified and modernized, but this was not enough. The main advantages of these engines are unpretentiousness and survivability, and the disadvantage is low power. All modernized internal combustion engines are very similar in design to the first model, and therefore their main problems are identical.

Opel engines of the Y20DTH and Y20DTL models have earned great popularity due to their characteristics and properties. That is why they were installed for quite a long time on two models of the automaker Vectra and Astra from 1998 to 2009:

Astra is a compact golf-class car that replaced the Kadett. At the moment, the manufacturer has introduced several generations of the model with various improvements. At the moment, the car is sold worldwide under several brands. It is the younger brother of Insignia, has a slightly smaller size.

Vectra is a middle class D car, which was produced until 2008, it was replaced by Opel Insignia. The first generation of the model became the basis for the Calibra coupe. As already mentioned, these are very tenacious engines that have been in operation for a long period. Turbines serve an average of about 300 thousand km. mileage, the piston group travels more than 500 thousand km. The camshaft and crankshaft chains take care of 300 thousand km, here it is more necessary to monitor not the chain, but the tensioners, on which output can be collected.

In general, the engine itself is very reliable and unpretentious. Owners of cars on which such a motor is installed note the fact that they do not resort to serious repairs on a run of 300-500 thousand km, and sometimes even more. Naturally, the life of the engine depends on the quality of the lubricants used, fuel, care and driving style.

To change the oil, it is necessary to pour about 5 liters of lubricant into the engine. Oils with a viscosity of 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 or 5W-40 are used. The engine number in both models is located at the bottom. To do this, you need to get under the car, the number is located between the motor itself and the main radiator on the block. In this case, if a protection is installed on the car, then it has to be removed to see the number.

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability;

The unit can be used for a long time without any problems. At the same time, experts note that there are not many “sores” in these engines, and all of them are mainly associated only with natural and age-related wear. The rarest problem is a crankshaft failure that occurs during engine start or on the go. If the engine has already rewound more than 300 thousand km, then such a nuisance occurs with frequent tight driving.

When the crankshaft breaks, the pistons and valves are the first to suffer.

Also in such cases there are problems with the lubrication of the liners. At high loads and low speed (which is typical for tight driving), the lubrication of the liners is insufficient. As a result, at any moment they jam or turn. A little more often, there are cases of chipping off the plastic of the guide rails of the timing chains. As a result, small particles enter the oil receiver of the oil pump and clog it. The so-called oil starvation appears and the liners begin to suffer from it.

The main common problems for these two engines are related to the fuel pump. With him quite often there are problems that are associated with mechanics and electronics. Often the control transistor fails as a result of overheating. The main sign of this failure is the fact that the engine refuses to start, but all systems are working normally, and the indicators do not give errors. Another weak point of the fuel system is the pump shaft sensor cable - over a long period of operation, moisture and the influence of aggressive substances, it simply rots due to corrosion.

Given the high mileage and age of Opel diesel engines of these models, EGR problems are typical for them. The fact is that the intake tract is heavily clogged with carbon deposits and the resulting soot. To avoid such problems, experts recommend periodic cleaning of the intake tract every 50 thousand kilometers.

Symptoms of problems with the EGR are uncertain and intermittent starting of the engine.

Sometimes owners of vehicles that have these engines installed sometimes simply turn off this system, resorting to a more effective solution. But in this case, it is required to deceive the brains of the engine with a special emulator. The particulate filter is also often clogged. The only solution to this problem was to cut it out. And it clogs as a result of prolonged use. The turbines in these models are quite tenacious and hardy, they can easily last more than 300 thousand kilometers.

In general, the Opel Y20DTH and Y20DTL engines are reliable, simple and unpretentious in maintenance. However, like other models, they have characteristic problems that are solved quite simply and quickly. Hardy parts, high-quality engine as a whole, careful study of details allows you not to resort to serious repairs over a long period of operation. You can increase the life of the engine without breakdowns by using high-quality fuel and lubricants, careful driving, proper care and compliance with all manufacturer's recommendations.

When carrying out repairs and replacement of consumables, it is better to first consult with specialists. It is also recommended to trust the repair to the masters. The fact is that these engines, although simple and hardy, require quite a careful attitude and special knowledge.

These models already use rather complex electronics, which only a qualified master can deal with.
