Renault D-series engines

The Renault D-series gasoline engine family was produced from 1996 to 2018 and included two different series.

The range of gasoline engines Renault D-series was produced by the company from 1996 to 2018 and was installed on such compact models of the concern as Clio, Twingo, Kangoo, Modus and Wind. There were two different modifications of such power units with cylinder heads for 8 and 16 valves.

Renault D-series 8-valve engines

In the early 90s of the last century, Renault needed a compact power unit for the new Twingo model, since the E-series engine could not fit under the hood of such a baby. The engineers were faced with the task of making a very narrow internal combustion engine, so he received the nickname Diet. Dimensions aside, this is a pretty classic engine with a cast-iron block, an aluminum 8-valve SOHC head without hydraulic lifters, and a timing belt drive.

In addition to the popular 7 cc D1149F gasoline engine in Europe, the Brazilian market offered a 999 cc D7D engine with a reduced piston stroke. There, units with a working volume of less than one liter have significant tax benefits.

The family of 8-valve power units included only a couple of the engines described above:

1.0 liters (999 cm³ 69 × 66.8 mm) / 8V
D7D (54 – 58 hp / 81 Nm) Renault Clio 2 (X65), Kangoo 1 (KC)

1.2 liters (1149 cm³ 69 × 76.8 mm) / 8V
D7F (54 – 60 hp / 93 Nm) Renault Clio 1 (X57), Clio 2 (X65), Kangoo 1 (KC), Twingo 1 (C06), Twingo 2 (C44)

Renault D-series 16-valve engines

At the end of 2000, a modification of this power unit appeared with a 16-valve head. The narrow cylinder head could not accommodate two camshafts and the designers had to create a system of forked rockers so that one camshaft controlled all the valves here. And for the rest, there is the same in-line cast-iron block for four cylinders and a timing belt drive.

As in the previous case, on the basis of the European 1.2-liter D4F engine, an engine was created for Brazil with a piston stroke reduced by 10 mm and a displacement of just under 1 liter. There was also a modification of this turbocharged engine under its D4Ft index.

The family of 16-valve power units included only the three engines described above:

1.0 liters (999 cm³ 69 × 66.8 mm) / 16V
D4D (76 – 80 hp / 95 – 103 Nm) Renault Clio 2 (X65), Kangoo 1 (KC)

1.2 liters (1149 cm³ 69 × 76.8 mm) / 16V

D4F ( 73 – 79 hp / 105 – 108 Nm ) Renault Clio 2 (X65), Clio 3 (X85), Kangoo 1 (KC), Modus 1 (J77), Twingo 1 (C06), Twingo 2 (C44)
D4Ft (100 – 103 hp / 145 – 155 Nm) Renault Clio 3 (X85), Mode 1 (J77), Twingo 2 (C44), Wind 1 (E33)
