They say that someone who drives a Subaru will never switch to another brand of car. Whether this is true or not is debatable, but there is a reason for such a statement.
Subaru's iron horses, released more than twenty years ago, run to this day. An important role in this was played by the power units installed on them.
In this context, engines of the EN series are considered, which were first introduced in 1988 as a replacement for the two-cylinder in-line engine of the EK series with air (and later liquid) cooling (in 1969-1972 it was installed on the Subaru R-2). Despite thirty years of experience, they are still being installed on minivans and small trucks.
Both motors share two common features. Firstly, they are both in-line, which is not typical for the “corporate style” of the concern, which is the ancestor and strict adherent of boxer internal combustion engines. Secondly, these engines have two versions: atmospheric and turbocharged.
Technical specifications
The following table shows the basic technical parameters of the motors in question. For some indicators (power, torque, fuel consumption, etc.), a certain range of values \uXNUMXb\uXNUMXbis indicated.
This is due to the fact that both units have many modifications (in particular, en07 has more than 10 of them!), which differ from each other in design features, for example, the number of camshafts (1 or 2), the number of valves (8 or 16), the type transmission connections (MT or CVT), etc.

The en05 engine is used only on one brand of car: Subaru Rex (1972 -1992).
The range of use of en07 is much wider.

On Sambar, Pleo and Stella models, instead of en07, you can install a three-cylinder KF engine of similar technical characteristics.
Reliability and maintainability
Any engine is designed in such a way that its life cycle, in other words, motor resource, is as long as possible. This means that the conditions for its operation will be strictly observed, such as:
- use of the recommended engine oil and its timely replacement;
- refueling with high-quality gasoline with the appropriate octane rating;
- making the necessary adjustments (if any);
- compliance with the temperature regime;
- calm driving style at low speeds (if it is not a sports car), etc.
It is well known that Japanese engineers in the field of engine building (and not only) are masters of their craft, however, they are not capable of creating a perpetual motion machine. As for the en05 and en07 engines, they are considered reliable units in their category, and if they are not “raped” and “fed” as they should be, they can be driven at least 200 km without any problems.
In disassembly, both motors are quite simple and understandable, so repairing them will not cause much difficulty for an experienced mechanic. The main problem will be to find the right parts.
Purchase of a contract engine
There are not many offers for the sale of contract ICEs of the EN series, but they are. The price of the unit ranges from 20 to 35 thousand rubles, depending on the mileage, age, completeness (availability of attachments), etc. For obvious reasons, sellers are mainly firms from Siberia and the Far East.
When buying a used motor, the main problem is the exact definition of the desired model (C, D, E, V, Y, Z, etc.), since the documents often indicate only the basic marking without detailing. Competent sellers try to provide the buyer with the most complete information about the product, for example:
- EN07C RR/4WD SOHC (MT) Sambar KS4 91;
- EN07D FF SO (CVT) R2 RC1 04.
For those who are desperate to find a suitable option, the door to automotive forums is open, where Subaru experts willingly share their secrets. For example, according to one meticulous forum member, the en07e engine can be changed to the en07u engine by rearranging the cylinder head assembly and replacing the timing belt. The Japanese are unlikely to come up with such a seditious thought. But Russian craftsmen are strong because they always have such powerful weapons as a sledgehammer and "some kind of mother" at their disposal.
