Toyota 2NR-FKE, 8NR-FTS drivers
Content
Petrol engines from Toyota of the NR series are one of the most modern generations of units, which continues to develop on the current model range of cars from the corporation. The Japanese surprise with the manufacturability of the units, the reduction in fuel consumption and the art of proper “downsizing” - reducing the volume in order to increase the environmental friendliness of engines.
Models 2NR-FKE and 8NR-FTS have a lot in common, even if they have taken different roots. Today we will talk separately about the characteristics of these units, their common problems and advantages.
Characteristics of the 2NR-FKE engine from Toyota
Working volume | 1.5 l |
Number of cylinders | 4 |
Number of valves | 16 |
Cylinder block | aluminum |
Bore | 72.5 mm |
Piston stroke | 90.6 mm |
Injection type | injector (MPI) |
Power | 109 h.p. at 6000 rpm |
Torque | 136 N * m at 4400 rpm |
Fuel | gasoline 95, 98 |
Fuel consumption: | |
– urban cycle | 6.5 l / 100 km |
- suburban cycle | 4.9 l / 100 km |
Turbine | no |
The engine is simple, has no turbine. Its approximate resource is 200 km, since the aluminum cylinder block is not serviced. Despite this, no significant problems arise during operation until the end of the resource.
Target vehicles: Toyota Corolla Axio, Corolla Fielder, Toyota Sienta, Toyota Porte.

This engine model has a turbocharger, which allows you to achieve incredible torque while maintaining a resource of up to 200 km. Of course, with such a small volume, it would be wrong to expect a larger resource. Those. engine data is quite interesting, given the current environmental requirements.
8NR-FTS is installed on the following models: Toyota Auris, Toyota CH-R.
The advantages of this line of Japanese motors
- Profitability. These are quite technological and modern developments that began to be installed in 2015 on Toyota cars.
- Ecological purity. The standards of the transitional period from Euro 5 to Euro 6 are fully observed in these units.
- Valve train chain. A chain is installed on both engines, which allows you not to think about the maintenance of the gas distribution system and reduces the cost of operation.
- Practicality. Despite the small volumes, the engines are perfectly tuned for operation in normal domestic conditions on traditional cars.
- Reliability. Simple and proven solutions have already been used on other units, there are no minor problems in the operation of the motor.
Are there any shortcomings and problems with the NR line?
It is these two representatives of the series that turned out to be quite reliable, they do not shine with an abundance of childhood diseases. Among the minuses are too small a resource, the inability to make major repairs, as well as rather expensive spare parts.
At certain intervals, you will have to clean the EGR and intake manifold. On the 8NR-FTS, the turbine may also require repair. Already after 100 km, the motors lose some of their confidence and begin to demand attention. Engines are very sensitive to the quality of oil and fuel, so only good fluids recommended by the manufacturer should be poured into them.
Conclusions about 2NR-FKE and 8NR-FTS motors
These are two modern power units that are equipped with simple and practical systems. VVT-i no longer causes serious problems, the injection system copes with Russian fuel (but without fanaticism). The timing chain does not cause problems up to 120-150 thousand kilometers. Despite the short resource, these engines have a fairly affordable cost, so they can be replaced with contract ones in a few years.
While the engines are new, there are practically no contract options. However, their mass character means that second-hand versions from Japan in decent condition will soon be introduced to the market. You should not think about tuning the units, this will reduce their resource and change the main operational parameters.
