Toyota 4Runner Engines

Toyota 4Runner is a car that is well known all over the world (especially in America and Russia). With us, it has taken root very well, as it fits perfectly with our mentality, lifestyle and roads. This is a comfortable, passable, reliable SUV with an acceptable level of comfort. And what else does a Russian person need to get around?

The 4 Runner can be ridden around the city, it can go fishing or hunting cross-country, and it is safe to travel with the family. Let's also not forget that components for Toyota are relatively inexpensive.

It is worth considering all the generations of this Toyota, both for the American market and for the Old World car market, and get to know the power units of these cars in more detail.

Below it will be clear that cars from the second generation and above are considered. Let's make a reservation right away that the first generation Toyota 4Runner was tailored for the American market and was a two-seater three-door car with a rear cargo area, there was also a rare five-seater version. It was produced from 1984 to 1989. Now such cars can no longer be found, and therefore it makes no sense to talk about them.

European market

The car came here only in 1989. It was the car of the second generation, which was made on the basis of the Hilux pickup truck from Toyota. The most running engine for this model is a three-liter gasoline V6 with a capacity of 145 hp, which was labeled as 3VZ-E. Another power plant that was popular on this car is the 22-liter 2,4R-E engine (a classic inline four with a return of 114 horsepower). Versions with diesel turbocharged four-cylinder engines were rare. There were two of them (the first with a displacement of 2,4 liters (2L-TE) and the second with a volume of 3 liters (1KZ-TE). The power of these engines was 90 and 125 “horses”, respectively.

In 1992, a restyled version of this SUV was brought to Europe. The model has become a little more modern. And had new engines. The base engine is a 3Y-E (two-liter gasoline, power - 97 "horses"). There was also a gasoline engine with a large displacement of three liters - this is 3VZ-E, it produced 150 horsepower. 2L-T is a diesel engine (2,4 liters displacement) that produces 94 hp, 2L-TE is also a “diesel” with the same volume (2,4 liters), its power is 97 “mares” .

This concludes the European history of the Toyota 4Runner. The brutal large SUV did not appeal to the inhabitants of the Old World, where they traditionally love small cars that consume little fuel and can only move on good roads.

The US market

Here, motorists know a lot about good large cars. In America, they quickly realized that the Toyota 4Runner is a worthy car and began to actively buy it. Here 4 Runner is sold from 1989 to the present day.

This car came here for the first time in its second generation. This was in 1989, as we just said. This was a car that should be called a "workhorse", it did not stand out in any way outwardly, but it moved perfectly in any conditions. For this car, the Japanese offered one single engine - it was a 3VZ-E gasoline engine with a displacement of three liters and a power of 145 horsepower.

In 1992, the second generation Toyota 4Runner was restyled. There were no significant changes in the appearance of the car. His engines were the same as for the European market (petrol 3Y-E (two-liter, power - 97 hp), petrol three-liter 3VZ-E (power 150 horsepower), "diesel" 2L-T with a working volume 2,4 liters and a power of 94 hp, as well as a diesel 2L-TE with a displacement of 2,4 liters and a power of 97 "horses").

In 1995, a new generation of the car came out and again almost no changes in appearance. Under the hood, he could have 3RZ-FE atmospheric fours with a displacement of 2,7 liters, which produced about 143 horsepower. A V-shaped "six" with a volume of 3,4 liters was also offered, its return was 183 hp, this internal combustion engine was marked as 5VZ-FE.

In 1999, the third generation 4 Runner was restyled. Externally, the car has become more modern, added style to the interior. The motor remained the same for the US market (5VZ-FE). Other motors were not officially supplied to this market in this generation of cars.

In 2002, the Japanese released the fourth generation of the car. It must be said that powerful cars were very fond of in the United States in those years. It is for this reason that 4 Runners with very strong motors were brought here. The 1GR-FE is a four-liter gasoline ICE, its power was 245 hp, and a 2UZ-FE (“gasoline” with a volume of 4,7 liters and a power equivalent to 235 horsepower) was also offered.

Sometimes the 2UZ-FE was tuned differently, in which case it became even more powerful (270 hp).

In 2005, the fourth generation restyled Toyota 4Runner was released. He had no less powerful power units under the hood. The weakest of them is the already proven 1GR-FE (4,0 liters and 236 hp). As you can see, its power has decreased slightly, this is due to new environmental requirements. 2UZ-FE is also a “pre-styling” engine, but with an increase in power up to 260 “horses”.

In 2009, the fifth generation 4Runner was brought to America. It was a fashionable, stylish and large SUV. It was offered with one engine - 1GR-FE. This motor has already been installed on its predecessors, but in this case it was “inflated” to 270 hp.

In 2013, an update of the fifth generation of 4 Runner was released. The car began to look very modern. As a power unit, the same 1GR-FE with 270 horsepower of the pre-styling version is offered to it.

These cars arrived in Russia, both exported from Europe and from America. For our secondary market, all engine options are relevant. To better understand the issue, let's summarize all the data on the Toyota 4Runner internal combustion engine in one table.
