Toyota C-HR engines

This project began with the first generation Toyota Prius in 1997, a compact and economical sedan for everyday driving. Its hybrid power plant consisted of a gasoline engine, an electric motor and a battery. Since then, one generation has been replaced by another. The power of the internal combustion engine, electric motors increased, additional options appeared. The direct prototype of the Toyota C-HR Hybrid was the fourth generation of the Toyota Prius, since they have the same platform and hybrid filling.

The Toyota C-HR was first seen with a concept model at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. The following year, this concept was a participant in the International Motor Show in Frankfurt and the 44th Tokyo Motor Show. The production car was officially shown at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

An all-new version of the C-HR was created to take the place of the upgraded RAV4 in the group's model family and return the compact crossover market to the Japanese automaker.

In the Japanese islands, the new model began to be sold at the end of 2016. A month later, this happened in Europe. Toyota C-HR became available to Russians from the second half of 2018.

Engines installed on C-XR

This first generation Toyota model has been in production since March 2016. Three brands of engines are installed on it, details of which are indicated in the table below:

Motor brandDisplacement, cm 3power, kWt
8NR-FTS120085 (85,4)
3ZR-FAE2000109
2ZR-FXE180072 (electromo-
(Hybrid)grid – 53)

The base version of the C-HR had a 1,2-liter turbocharged engine, which used direct injection and Dual VVT-iW, with an output of 85,4 kW. It also provided for a two-liter naturally aspirated engine of 109 kW, a continuously variable CVT variator and front-wheel drive.

The advantages of the 3ZR-FAE engine, on which the intake valves could be adjusted in height using the Valvematic system, include a time-tested design, low fuel consumption in the urban cycle (8,8 l / 100 km) and acceleration time from standstill to 100 km /h in 11 seconds.

A complete novelty in Russia among Toyota internal combustion engines was a 1,2-liter turbocharged gasoline version. Its indisputable advantage was the torque of almost 190 Nm, available starting from 1,5 thousand rpm and fuel efficiency.

The gasoline 1,8-liter 2ZR-FXE engine has a high compression ratio (ε = 13), the possibility of changing the valve timing and the presence of the Muller cycle, which ensures high fuel efficiency and low exhaust toxicity.

The voltage of the 1NM electric motor is 0,6 kV, which produces 53 kW of power and a torque of 163 Nm. The voltage of the traction battery is 202 V.

The most common engines

The Toyota CXR crossover coupe has been mass-produced for only the third year. It is still difficult to judge which of the three brands of engines installed on this model will receive preference. The most common so far is the 8NR-FTS motor, which works with two types of transmissions: a variator or a 6-speed manual gearbox, and is installed on cars with front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Its distribution is also due to the fact that the C-HR model with this engine is sold, in addition to Japan and Europe, also in Russia.

With increasing environmental requirements for cars, the shares of the 2ZR-FXE engine installed on the Toyota C-HR hybrid model paired with an electric motor may increase. It is also important in this regard, and fuel efficiency for gasoline "hybrid" - 3,8 liters per 100 km on the highway.

The prospects for the 3ZR-FAE brand engine have already been determined by tradition. In addition to the considered Toyota model, it is installed on 10 more models of this brand of car.

On which models of the brand were these motors installed?

The motors installed on the Toyota C-HR, except for the 8NR-FTS brand, which was still equipped with the Auris E180 model, were widely used. This information is summarized in the table below:

The 8NR-FTS motor began to be installed on the Auris E180 model from 2015, that is, 1 year earlier than on the Toyota CXP. It also stands on four more models of this brand, and 3ZR-FAE on 10.

Comparison of cars with different engines

Toyota CXP with a hybrid drive, consisting of a 4-cylinder gasoline engine with a Miller cycle (simplified Atkinson cycle) and two electric motors, provides a full performance of 90 kW. The hybrid powertrain works through an E-CVT automatic transmission.

Driving the C-HR Hybrid is a pleasure with the smoothness and quietness of the E-CVT transmission. As a result, the salon is filled with a relaxed atmosphere.

Testing the CXP hybrid with an initial battery charge of even half, showed an average consumption 22% lower than indicated by the manufacturer: 8,8 liters in urban conditions and 5,0 liters on the road. The CXR 1.2 turbo has the following gas costs: in urban conditions - 9,6 liters, on the highway - 5,6 liters, with mixed driving - 7,1 liters.

Along with fuel economy and emission minimization, some countries encourage the purchase of hybrid vehicles through the provision of driving and tax advantages.

In another variant, the Toyota CXP, with a 4-cylinder 1,2-litre turbo engine delivering 85kW of power through a 6-speed manual transmission with iMT, has a smooth lift.

Driving a car with a turbo engine is a joy, despite its compactness, but with excellent throttle response and when a manual transmission with iMT is present.

The two-liter naturally aspirated 3ZR-FAE engine has stood the test of time and can compete with the other two. It is quite dynamic and accelerates quickly, but it does not have all-wheel drive, even as an option.
