Toyota Celsior engines

In 1989, Toyota launched Lexus' first luxury car, the LS 400. A purpose-built executive sedan was targeted for sale in the United States. However, there was also a great demand for F-class cars in the domestic market, so the right-hand drive version of the LS 400, the Toyota Celsior, appeared very soon.

First generation (saloon, XF10, 1989-1992)

Undoubtedly, Toyota Celsior is a car that changed the world. As early as 1989, this flagship combined a powerful yet quiet V-XNUMX engine with great styling, interiors made from natural materials, and numerous technological innovations.

A brand new 4-liter 1UZ-FE (V8, 32-valve DOHC, with VVT-i) engine from Toyota produced 250 hp. and a torque of 353 Nm at 4600 rpm, which allowed the sedan to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 8.5 seconds.

1UZ-FE was intended for top models of Toyota and Lexus.

The engine cylinder block was made of aluminum alloys and pressed with cast-iron liners. Two camshafts were hidden under two aluminum cylinder heads. In 1995, the installation was slightly modified, and in 1997 it was almost completely modified. The production of the power unit continued until 2002.

Second generation (sedan, XF20, 1994-1997)

Already in 1994, the second Celsior appeared, which, as before, became one of the first in the list of high-end luxury cars.

The changes made to the Celsior did not go beyond the concept. However, Celsior 2 received an even more spacious interior, an extended wheelbase and a modified 4-liter V-shaped 1UZ-FE power unit, but with a power of 265 hp.

In 1997, the model was restyled. In appearance - the design of the headlights has changed, and under the hood - the power of the engine, which has once again increased, now up to 280 hp.

Third generation (saloon, XF30, 2000-2003)

The Celsior 3, aka the Lexus LS430, debuted in mid-2000. The design of the updated model was the result of a new approach by Toyota specialists to the vision of their cars. The wheelbase of the updated Celsior has expanded again, and the height of the car has increased, however, as well as the interior. As a result, the flagship began to look even larger.

The engine capacity of the third Celsior has increased from 4 to 4.3 liters. The sedan was equipped with a new engine with a factory index - 3UZ-FE, with a power of 290 hp. (216 kW) at 5600 rpm. Toyota Celsior of the third generation demonstrated acceleration to 100 km / h in just 6.7 seconds!

The ICE 3UZ-FE, which was the heir to the 4-liter 1UZ-FE, received a BC from its predecessor. The cylinder diameter has been increased. New ones were used on the 3UZ-FE: pistons, connecting rods, cylinder head bolts and gaskets, intake and exhaust manifolds, spark plugs and ignition coils.

Also increased the diameter of the intake and exhaust channels. The VVTi system began to be used. In addition, an electronic damper appeared, the fuel and cooling systems of the engine were finalized.

3UZ-FE was installed on Toyota cars until in 2006 it was gradually replaced by the new V8 engine - 1UR.

In 2003, Celsior underwent another restyling, and also, for the first time in the history of the Japanese automaker, his car began to be equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Conclusion

The ancestor of the UZ engine family, the 1UZ-FE engine, appeared in 1989. Then, the new four-liter engine replaced the old 5V setup, gaining a reputation as one of the most reliable powertrains from Toyota.

1UZ-FE is exactly the case when the motor does not have design miscalculations, shortcomings and typical diseases. All malfunctions possible on this ICE can only be associated with its age and are completely dependent on the car owner.

Problems and flaws with 3UZ engines are also hard to find. Like its predecessor, the 3UZ-FE is a very reliable and extremely durable powertrain. It has no constructive miscalculations and, with timely maintenance, gives out a resource of more than half a million thousand kilometers.
