Toyota Picnic Engines

The Picnic is a seven-seater MPV-class car produced by the Japanese company Toyota from 1996 to 2009. Based on the Carina, the Picnic was a left-hand drive version of the Ipsum. It was never sold in North America, like many other Toyota vehicles, and was intended for consumers in Europe and Southeast Asia. Picnics were equipped with only two power units, gasoline and diesel engines.

First generation (minivan, XM10, 1996-2001)

The first generation Picnic went on sale in export markets in 1996. Under the hood, the car had either a gasoline internal combustion engine with serial number 3S-FE 2.0, or a 3C-TE diesel engine with a volume of 2.2 liters.

From the beginning of its production, Picnic was equipped with only one gasoline unit, which came with a completely new fuel supply system. 3S-FE (4-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC) is the main engine of the 3S ICE line. The unit used two ignition coils and it was possible to fill in the 92nd gasoline. The engine was installed on Toyota cars from 1986 to 2000.

Picnic has a 3 hp 128S-FE motor. turned out to be quite noisy, this was especially noticeable when accelerating, which was due to the design of the gas distribution mechanism. Up to a hundred Picnic with a 3S-FE engine accelerated in 10.8 seconds.

Diesel power plants of the 3C series, which replaced 1C and 2C, were produced directly at Japanese factories. The 3C-TE engine was a classic swirl-chamber diesel engine with a cast-iron cylinder block. A pair of valves was provided for each cylinder.

Second generation (minivan, XM20, 2001-2009)

The second generation of the beloved five-door minivan was put on sale in May 2001.

Cars of the second generation were better known as Avensis Verso, the range of power units for which consisted of 2.0 and 2.4 liter gasoline engines, as well as a 2.0 turbodiesel.

Picnic of the second generation was preserved only in a few secondary markets (Hong Kong, Singapore), for which the car was equipped with only one gasoline engine - 1AZ-FE with a volume of 2.0 liters and a power of 150 hp. (110 kW).

The AZ engine series, which appeared in 2000, replaced the popular S-engine family in its post. The 1AZ-FE power unit (in-line, 4-cylinder, sequential multi-point injection, VVT-i, chain drive) was the base engine of the line and a replacement for the well-known 3S-FE.

The cylinder block in 1AZ-FE was made of aluminum alloys. The engine used an electronic damper and other innovations. Unlike its predecessor, the 1AZ modifications have not reached a large scale, but this ICE is still in production.

Restyling of the second generation Picnic took place in 2003. The minivan was completely discontinued at the end of 2009.

Conclusion

The 3S-FE power unit can rightly be considered a classic engine from Toyota. Its two liters is enough for good dynamics. Of course, for a car of such a class as Picnic, the volume could have been made more.

Of the minuses of the 3S-FE, some noise of the unit can be noted in operation, but in general, all engines of the 3S series are like that in themselves. Also, in connection with the gear in the 3S-FE timing mechanism, the loads on the belt drive increase significantly, which requires more careful monitoring of it, although the valves on this motor do not bend when the belt breaks.

Power unit 3S-FE

In general, the 3S-FE engine is quite a good unit. With regular maintenance, a car with it drives for a long time and the resource easily exceeds 300 thousand km.

Reviews about the reliability of the 3C series motors vary, although this family is considered more durable than the previous 1C and 2C. 3C units have excellent power ratings and dynamic characteristics that are quite acceptable for their specifications.

The 3C-TE, however, has its own characteristic faults and weaknesses, due to which the 3C series motors have earned fame as the most strange and illogical Toyota installations of the last 20 years.

As for the 1AZ-FE power units, we can say that in general, they are good, of course, if you monitor their condition in time. Despite the non-repairability of the 1AZ-FE cylinder block, the resource of this engine is quite high, and a run of 300 thousand is not at all uncommon.
