In fact, Tacoma, manufactured by Toyota since 1995, is the same Hilux, but designed for the US market. For a long time it was the best-selling mid-size pickup, equipped with 2.4 and 2.7-liter gasoline inline-fours, as well as a 6-liter V3.4 engine. In the second generation, the engines were replaced with more modern ones, I4 2.7 and V6 4.0 l, and in the third, a modern unit under the 2GR-FKS index was installed on the car.
Diesel engines were not provided for the Tacoma.
The first generation (1995-2004)
A total of three powertrains were available for the Toyota Tacoma with automatic or manual transmissions:
- 4-liter I4 2RZ-FE engine with 142 hp and 217 Nm of torque;
- 7-liter I4 3RZ-FE engine with 150 hp and 240 Nm of torque;
- as well as a 3.4-liter six-cylinder unit 5VZ-FE with a rated output of 190 hp. and 298 Nm of torque.
In the first couple of years of production, the Tacoma sold very well, attracting many young buyers. In the first generation, two restylings of the model were carried out: the first - in 1998, and the second - in 2001.

3RZ-FE
The motor was produced from 1994 to 2004. This is one of the largest units in the 3RZ line, equipped with two balance shafts in the crankcase.

The second generation (2005-2015)
At the 2004 Chicago Auto Show, Toyota introduced the larger, more powerful Tacoma. The updated car was available in as many as eighteen different configurations. An X-Runner version was also introduced, replacing the slow-selling S-Runner from the previous generation.
- Tacoma X-Runner was equipped with a 4.0-liter V6 engine with a six-speed manual transmission. A new powertrain, the 1GR-FE, replaced the original 3.4-liter 5VZ-FE V6. The motor turned out to be better than its predecessor. It produced 236 horsepower and showed a torque of 387 Nm at 4400 rpm.
- A smaller, 4-cylinder alternative to the 4.0L engine, the 2TR-FE unit, featured in less expensive models, was rated at 159 hp. and 244 Nm of torque. With a volume of 2.7 liters, it was very different from its predecessor, 3RZ-FE.
1GR-FE
1GR-FE - V-shaped, 6-cylinder gasoline engine. Produced since 2002. The unit is designed for large SUVs and pickups.

2TR—FE

Third generation (2015-present)
The new Tacoma was officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2015, with US sales following in September of that year.
