Climbing on snow and ice can be dangerous. Caution is advised, but many drivers interpret this as a slow uphill climb. However, in this case, if the speed is too low, the car may stop on an icy hill, which is fraught with the risk that the car will start to slide.
– Pick up speed as you go uphill, and then maintain speed, which may include adding a little throttle. It is best to use a gear that will allow you not to downshift while driving, advises Zbigniew Veseli, director of the Renault Driving School. The momentum and constant speed minimize the risk of stalling on a hill. However, when the wheels begin to spin on the spot, the driver has to stop the car and try to start again, because each addition of gas will increase the effect of slipping. It is important that the wheels point straight ahead, as turning the wheels further destabilizes the vehicle.
When driving uphill in winter, stay as far away from the vehicle in front as possible. If possible, it is safer to wait until the vehicle in front has risen. Especially when the hill is very steep or you are following a truck. These vehicles are particularly prone to difficulty climbing hills, due to their size and weight, they lose traction more easily and may begin to slide downhill.
