Battery Expert: Charging the [Tesla] Electric Vehicle Only Up To 70 Percent

John Dahn of Dalhousie University is a Li-ion battery expert who has worked closely with Tesla for over a year. The scientist recommends charging the battery to only 70 percent of its capacity, in this way to extend their life.

Tesla's documentation urges us not to fully charge the battery unless we have a long journey ahead of us. The recommended charge level is 90 percent.

Elon Musk goes even lower. In response to a question asked in 2014, he recommended charging to 80 percent rather than 90 percent, as long as that is enough to use the car all day:

John Dahn goes even further. It recommends not to exceed 70 percent. Should you need more range, you can always fully charge the batteries. The scientist rather knows what he is saying: he specializes in the consumption of Li-ion batteries and announced in May this year that he had managed to modify the internal chemistry of the battery in such a way as to double the consumption of cells.
