The American portal Electrek has published photos of Tesla's new cells / supercapacitors, which are allegedly being developed as part of the Roadrunner project. They appear to be much larger in diameter than the 2170 cells produced so far used in the Tesla Model 3. Our estimates indicate that they can be designated 4290 (42900).

We made the above estimates by measuring photos and comparing them to hand size, so they may not be accurate. However, Electrek confirms that the rolls are double the diameter of the 2170 mesh used in the Tesla Model 3 and Y.

According to internet users, the markings visible on the case resemble those of the Maxwell supercapacitors (54 = 5,4V), so the cylinder can be a conventional or an improved supercapacitor. It can be a lithium-ion battery. Finally, it could be a hybrid system. Definitely Larger volume means longer anode + electrolyte + cathode tape can be wound inside at lower housing costs.

As a reminder, Tesla will work on low-cost, high-density cells as part of the Roadrunner project. They need to be welded, not connected with soldered wires. This should provide a higher energy density at the chassis level, i.e. the entire battery, including the container, electronics and cooling system.

Tesla expects it to produce up to 1 GWh / 000 TWh of these cells per year in the future.
