Electric BMW Megacity will use SB LiMotive batteries

La BMW Megapolis may become a reality very soon. The German car manufacturer has already selected a supplier to equip its new car with a power supply for the electric motor system. SB LiMotornyas a result of the partnership between Bosch et Samsung SDI, will be part of the Megacity project, and this will allow BMW access to advanced technologies lithium ion batteries.

In June 2008, a joint venture agreement was signed between Samsung and Bosch to develop, manufacture and market lithium-ion batteries for automobiles. Focusing on developing products that meet automotive industry standards for safety, performance, durability and cost, SB LiMotive offers a range of high quality and cost effective lithium ion batteries for a variety of applications as well as automotive engine systems.

With regard to the BMW Megacity project, it is likely that Samsung, which already has extensive experience in reliable and proven technology in creation and development of batteries for mobile phones and laptops, will take care of the design of the lithium-ion battery cells. However, integrating this technology into the vehicle requires the highest standards in terms of durability, reliability and safety, and it is at this level that Bosch will intervene.

The good news is that there are plans to set up a structure to recycle these batteries. Kim Sun Tech, PDG from Samsung SDI:

« Our main goal is to provide BMW with the best battery technology available in terms of performance, range and safety, while at the same time we want to ensure that SB LiMotive Lithium Ion batteries can be reused or recycled after use in the vehicle., "

We look forward to the results of the collaboration between BMW, Samsung and Bosch, three global technology leaders.
