Is electric cross worth the interest? How does it work in the field?

For some, an e-bike may be the exact opposite of what they enjoy off-road. The electric motors make a sound that sounds more like a toy car in which children roam the lawn in the backyard. However, it's undeniable that an electric motocross bike is as good as older gas-powered machines (in terms of performance). It is also often lighter, lacking some of the features seen on traditional machines, and can be ridden off-road and around the city. It's time to present the characteristics of these two-wheeled vehicles.

Which electric cross is suitable for the smallest?

In the category of children's two-wheelers, you will find many different electric models. This is for example:

● Mini E-Cross Orion;

● Mini Cross LIA 704 and 705;

● Mini Cross XTR 701;

● Yamaha XTR 50;

● The trial of the young rider Kuberga.

Such models are a lot of fun for children and give parents the confidence that they will not accelerate to dangerous speeds. Usually cars for the smallest have speed and power limiters that can be set with a key at several levels. The load of such an electric cross does not exceed 35-40 kg, so it will suit both a girl and a boy.

However, the above suggestions will not be the main items on the list. It is worth treating them like a curiosity. Of course, you can give your child such a wonderful toy at an affordable price (depending on the model).

Electric Cross Bike – KTM Freeride E-XC, Tinbot, SUR-RON or Kuberg Freerider?

For true off-road enthusiasts, the electric KTM Freeride E-XC is the only right choice. This is the second batch of a successful design powered by a battery and brushless motor. However, this is far from all that can be recommended in this group of two-wheeled vehicles. Interesting suggestions for beginners are also:

Let's leave the strange whistling of the electric motor for a while and focus on its advantages. While the acoustic qualities and squeal of a combustion engine are quintessential off-road (and motorsports in general), we won't feel too lacking in the case of the electrics. Due to the relatively quiet operation of the engine, the electric cross is great for discreet off-road driving. After all, what most often worries the neighbors of an SUV? Dust? Ruts? Probably noise.

Definitely, the last factor is a bone of contention between the owner of a two-wheeled motorcycle and passive observers of his exploits. If you subtract that loud engine sound and replace it with a light whistling sound, you can avoid many conflicts.

We are quite serious now. Separately, it should be said about the design of the engine itself. Depending on the specific model, you can drive a two-wheeled vehicle with a power of several or several kW. For example, the KTM Freeride E-XC has 24,5 hp. and 42 Nm of torque available from the spot. This of course applies to all electric motocross bikes. Smaller units are air-cooled while others are liquid-cooled. The described KTM in the mode that gives the least power has a very interesting function. This allows you to recover energy while moving down the slope.

Electric cross and other structural elements

We will step away from the engine for a moment and focus on its "fuel", i.e. the battery. It is she, as in the case of electric vehicles, that is the main element that limits fun. The Mountster S80 model has 30 Ah batteries, which allows you to travel at speeds up to 90 km/h. What is the catch of this electric cross bike? Constant maintenance of such speeds will allow you to drive without recharging for only a few tens of minutes. The charging process takes 3 hours if you use a fast charger.

Sur-Ron Storm Bee E vs Electric KTM Freeride E-XC Technical Details

The Sur-Ron Storm Bee E has a slightly larger lithium-ion battery. The capacity of 48 Ah allows you to drive 100 km at a speed of 50 km/h. Riding at bike speed allows this electric cross bike to double its range.

What about the KTM pioneer? The electric KTM Freeride E-XC in the second version is equipped with a 3,9 kWh battery. Charging it takes just over 1,5 hours and allows you to drive about 77 kilometers or 90 minutes of driving. One of the things that might put you off is the price of an electric KTM at €31.

Which electric cross to choose for yourself?

There are many variables to consider when making a decision:

• budget;
• admission;
• wet;
• frame height; 
• maximum load; 
• aesthetic questions. 

You will notice (as with other vehicles) that the more powerful it is, the more you will have to pay for it. A Mountster S80 with just over 9 hp costs about 20 31 PLN. For the KTM shown above, you'll have to pay €50 + just over €4 for the charger. The Sur-Ron Storm Bee costs almost $00. zloty. Kuberg Freerider with about 40 hp costs more than PLN 11.

Expensive but Eco-Friendly Electric Motocross Bikes – Should You Invest in Them?

So is it worth it to go towards electrical madness? I must admit that to start enjoying off-road, not only in the ECO version, you need to dig in your pocket. However, in the case of electric crossovers, regular replacement of pistons, connecting rods, oil, and adjustment of valve clearances are a thing of the past. You will avoid many other activities related to the maintenance of combustion devices. You also don't have to worry about oil dosing in two-stroke engines. In the case of an electrician, it is quieter, cleaner (in the garage) and lighter. In addition, you know that you are driving an environmentally friendly vehicle that does not pollute the environment.

Buy an electric cross bike now or postpone?

KTM's president said the electric crossover in the company's offering will not be an isolated case. Therefore, we can expect more powerful and economical machines at lower prices in the near future. Such electric two-wheelers are not yet suitable for professional sports, but training is already possible and enjoyable. If you are a hobbyist, spending tens of thousands of PLN on a new car may not be the best solution. But if the budget allows...

If you want to buy a classic 250 cross bike, then you can do it. However, nothing prevents after a while to decide, for example, on a new electric KTM. The price should come down as more environmentally friendly models hit the market. The lower running costs of electric cross bikes could be the source of their good sales performance in the near future.
