Electric car. How will he behave in the cold?

Electric car. How will he behave in the cold? ADAC simulated a long stop of an electric car on a cold winter night. What conclusions can be drawn from the experiment?

Two popular vehicles were tested, namely the Renault Zoe ZE 50 and the Volkswagen e-up. Under what conditions was the simulation carried out? Temperatures quickly dropped from -9 degrees Celsius to -14 degrees Celsius.

The cars were fully charged. The heated seats and interior (22 degrees C) and side lights were turned on. Cars prepared in this way were left for 12 hours.

After 12 hours of inactivity, Renault Zoe used up about 70 percent. energy. Volkswagen e-up has about 20 percent left. ADAC said the 52kWh battery in the Renault Zoe should last about 17 hours of downtime with the heating and lighting on. In the case of the e-up model, a 32,2 kWh battery will provide power for approximately 15 hours.

How to extend downtime? ADAC advises better to turn off the heated windshield, wipers or low beam headlights. In extreme cases, you can completely turn off the interior heating and leave only the heated seats

What else to remember? If we have to travel in difficult conditions, it is better to fully charge it in advance.

How much range should an electric car have?

Results of the latest research conducted by InsightOut Lab in collaboration with the brand Volkswagen show that the requirements of the respondents for the range that electric vehicles must provide in order to make them useful in everyday life have increased. In April 2020, during the first release of the survey, 8% of respondents were of the opinion that a range of up to 50 km would be enough for them, 20% chose the answer 51-100 km, and another 101% of respondents indicated a range of 200-20 km. In other words, as many as 48% of those surveyed indicated a range of up to 200 km.

In the current edition of the survey, this percentage was only 32% of respondents, and 36% indicated a range of more than 400 km (11 pp more than in the previous year).
