Electric vehicles from 2020 to 2019 – with which models can differences between years be significant?

The 2019 Electric Vehicle Sale continues. For this reason, you regularly come back to us with questions whether it is better to choose an electrician X (2019) or buy X (2020). We decided to record the differences between the model years of different brands to help you make your choice. The list is based on manufacturers' catalogs, partly in our memory, therefore it cannot be exhaustive.

It is worth remembering that model years (a + 1) are most often proposed from the third / fourth quarter of the previous year. This means: Model Year (2020) can often be purchased from October 2019. 2019 [production date] i (2019) [model year] is not exactly the same, please note both dates.

If the model you are interested in is not below (for example, Nissan Leaf, Skoda CitigoE iV, Mercedes EQC, Kia e-Soul), this means that there was no or we do not know the difference between model / production years. Then we recommend taking a look at the reviews of our reliable readers 😉

Model year and surcharges

When buying vehicles of an earlier age, you should choose vehicles that have not been registered. Only new and unregistered vehicles Allow Green Car Subsidy:

> Acceptance of applications for subsidy for electric vehicles = Green Car. Start on June 26 from 18,75 thousand rubles. Financing in PLN

Below we will tell you about brand new cars, that is, with a range of up to 20-30 kilometers. When we select a demo, we must remember that its battery has already gone through a certain number of charge cycles. It is also possible that the car has not been used for several weeks with batteries charged to 100 percent, which does not serve the cells very well and can accelerate their destruction.

Electric vehicles 2020 vs 2019 – what to choose

Audi e-tron (2020) and (2019)

For model year (2020) the Audi e-tron 55 Quattro has a range of 25 WLTP units, thanks to an increase in usable battery capacity from 83,6 kWh to 86,5 kWh. The total capacity did not change, so the software had to be tweaked or optimized.

Electric vehicles from 2020 to 2019 – with which models can differences between years be significant?

It is unclear if the (2019) version can be loaded with software to increase usable capacity.

If we choose between e-tron (2019) and (2020), we still recommend keeping an eye on the amount of the discount.

BMW i3

From the model year (2019) onwards, only the 120 Ah version should be offered, i.e. with a battery capacity of 39 (42,2) kWh. There were no significant changes in the model year (2020), so we recommend that you keep an eye on the size of the discount.

Electric vehicles from 2020 to 2019 – with which models can differences between years be significant?

Hyundai Ioniq Electric (2020) and (2019)

The Hyundai Ioniq Electric from model year (2020) has an increased battery to 38 from the previous 28 kWh. It also features updated lighting. However, a large battery capacity will reduce the maximum charging power, making it difficult to drive on the road.

If we choose between Ioniq Electric (2019) and (2020), then for frequent commuting, option (2019) may, paradoxically, be the best choice.

Hyundai Kona Electric (2020) (2019)

Introduced in Model Year (2020) optional On-board charger with 3-pole power supply 11 kW. In addition, all versions (2020) leaving the Czech Republic have a catalog of 484 units of the WLTP range, while variants produced in South Korea from the start offer 449 units regardless of the model year (valid only for the version on 64 kWh).

This is probably a matter of achieving real results, and not of specific differences between the production sites of the car, aside from other tires.

If we choose between the years (2019) and (2020), let the size of the discount decide.

Kia e-Niro (2020) and (2019)

The Kia e-Niro has been supporting the Uvo Connect app from the 2020 model year. In earlier versions this was not possible due to the lack of communication modules.

For the new model year, the taillights have also changed (improved) and there may be full LED headlights in the front. In previous years, incandescent bulbs were used for low and high beam headlamps, but there were a few pieces with full LED headlights. They usually came from press parks and limited editions.

Year of manufacture Kia e-Niro (2020)

As a curiosity, we can add that the Kie e-Niro, available to the Polish media for testing, had heat pumps, although they are not even offered as an option in Poland (but they can be ordered upon special request).

If you choose between e-Niro (2019) and (2020), it is better to take (2020).

Renault Zoe (2020) a (2019)

Renault Zoe (2019) can be available in two variants: ZE 40 and ZE 50. ZE 40 is the older version with a 41 kWh battery, a weaker engine is also possible (eg R110). The ZE 50 is equipped with 52 kWh batteries, which is an upgraded version.

Electric vehicles from 2020 to 2019 – with which models can differences between years be significant?

Renault Zoe ZE 50. From model year (2020), also available with a software limited battery as the ZE 40. It differs from the previous version in the headlights, radiator grille, daytime running lights, taillights and a much more beautiful interior. The facelifted version allows for the first time in history to order a CCS charging port, which matches the size of the Renault logo cap on the front of the vehicle.

Two versions are also available for the 2020 model year: the ZE 40 and ZE 50. However, both are based on the facelift version, and the battery capacity of the ZE 40 edition is limited by software. In Poland, the ZE 40 (2020) option is not offered:

> The new Renault Zoe ZE 40 is a battery version of the ZE 50 with limited software. And it's easy!

Also, please note that the CCS fast charging socket will only be delivered from the end of the first quarter of 2020. This means early models from late 2019 - but from model year (2020) onwards - might not.

If you choose between the Zoe ZE 50 (2019) and (2020), it would be better to take the cheaper model with the CCS socket. If we are choosing between the Zoe ZE 50 and ZE 40, then let's go with the bigger battery and the newer one.

Tesla Model 3

Tesla is gradually improving its cars, so in this case it will always be wiser to choose a copy as fresh as possible. There may be minor adverse changes (such as no lugs in the front trunk), but in general the younger the car, the better.

Tesla Model S / X

In the yearbook (2019), we can find pre-Raven (earlier, released before March 2019) and Raven (newer) versions. The Raven versions themselves have gone through at least one iteration, so it's best to pick the latest machine.

> There will be no cheaper Tesla Model Y Standard Range. Musk: It will have an unacceptably low range, less than 400 km.

We add that Tesla has for a long time refrained from accelerating the implementation of production years, since it has consistently applied optimization in cars. This changed in late 2019 when the model year (2020) went on sale.
