Electric scooter: how does it work?

Electric scooter: how does it work?

No gasoline, no carburetor ... devoid of the usual parts of a thermal scooter, an electric scooter uses various components specific to its operation, and in particular the battery used to store energy.

Electric scooter motor

On an electric scooter, the electric motor can be placed in different places. Some manufacturers choose to integrate it directly into the rear wheel - this is called "wheel motor" technology, while others opt for an outboard motor, usually with more torque.

In the technical description of an electric scooter, two values can be indicated: rated power and peak power, the latter referring to the theoretical maximum value, which in reality will be achieved very rarely.

Electric scooter battery

It is she who accumulates and distributes energy. Today, the battery, in most cases based on lithium technology, is the “reservoir” of our electric scooter. The larger its capacity, the better autonomy is achieved. On an electric car, this power is expressed in kWh – as opposed to a liter for a thermal scooter. Its calculation is based on multiplying its voltage by its current. For example, a scooter equipped with a 48V, 40Ah (48×40) battery has a capacity of 1920 Wh or 1,92 kWh (1000 Wh = 1 kWh).

Note: On some electric scooters, the battery is removable, which allows the user to easily remove it for charging at home or in the office.

Controller

It is a kind of "brain" that controls all the components. Providing a dialogue between the battery and the motor, the controller is also used to limit the maximum speed of the electric scooter or to adjust its torque or power.

Charger

It is he who provides the connection between the socket and the battery of your electric scooter.

In practice, this can:

  • Be integrated into the scooter : in this case, the cable supplied by the manufacturer is used to connect the socket to the scooter
  • Present yourself as an external device how it can be on the laptop.

Electric scooter: how does it work?

As for the charging time, it will mainly depend on two factors:

  • battery capacity : the more, the longer it will be
  • charger configuration which can withstand more or less power coming from the outlet

Attention: in order to avoid unpleasant surprises, be sure to use the charger provided by the manufacturer!
